Rubio to Syria’s Bashar al-Assad: You’re next, buddy

The death of Muammar al-Qaddafi today shows what's in store for the leadership of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, which will probably be the next group of tyrants to be thrown out of office and potentially killed, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), told The Cable.

"If you're the leaders of Syria, you're looking at today's events as a preview of what your future may hold," Rubio said in a Thursday interview.

Assad losing support in Arab world, U.S. viewed as playing negative role

As the United States and its allies seek to increase pressure on Damascus, there’s new evidence that the Arab world is turning sharply against the government of Bashar al-Assad.

A poll released Tuesday by the Arab American Institute Foundation finds that the overwhelming majority of those surveyed in six Arab countries side with Syrian demonstrators over Assad’s government. And asked whether they believed Assad could continue to govern, the vast majority in each country said they did not.

Arab mediators head to Syria as U.S. senators urge U.N. to refer Assad’s crimes to ICC.

An Arab delegation led by Qatar headed for Damascus on Wednesday for mediation between the Syrian government and its opponents, even as activists rejected dialogue and called for a general strike.

U.S. senators, meanwhile, urged the United Nations to refer credible charges of crimes against humanity by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“We will begin our meeting with Syrian officials in Damascus at around 3:00 pm (1200 GMT) to inform them of the initiative, agreed upon by 21 foreign ministers,” Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi told AFP

“I was placed on a seat in an empty room on my own. Outside I could hear beatings in a neighbouring room. People being slapped and wailing painfully as they were being whacked.

"The noise of a human being hit with that is something that just, you know, you shiver and shake. You hear a sound that you've never heard before. I've never heard before - and I've seen people dead, and I've seen people dying, and I've seen people decapitated - but this sound, hearing a man cry, is just like, awful, there's nothing to compare it with.”

DoorBert - Thanks for following this story. Unlike some of the other Arab Spring revolutions, if the Assad regime goes down I believe he may try to spark a regional war. Gadaffi was isolated both politically and geographically, not so with Assad. He is going to be a touger nut to crack.

My pleasure. This is the next domino. I think its going to take intervention by Turkey to break this nut.

earthquake in turkey and the operations they are doing in northern Iraq may hamper any turkish effort against assad right now...I would venture that maybe something more like what Nato did with Lybia is possible

I tend to agree with Doorbert on this. I think Turkish intervention is much more likely than NATO. Not that I think Turkey would try to march on Damascus, but they have threatened to carve out a security/buffer zone in Northern Syria in order to protect their border and serve as a refuge for Syrian opposition. They also held a decent sized military drill right along the border just a week ago (probably good practice for carving out said buffer zone)

It is hard to imagine NATO intervening in a country bordering Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon given the substantial risk of creating regional chaos. In contrast, Gadhafi was isolated politically and geographically.

Now there's a thought. With Gaddafi out of the way, I think pressure is only going to continue to grow on the international community to do something about Assad. Problem is any action taken by Turkey, NATO or anybody else for that matter is going to likely be done without the UN's blessing, because of the Chinese and Russian veto
