Banks To Charge You For Holding Your Own Money
Investors are well aware that money markets pay next to nothing in interest these days. Now one bank has announced a policy to actually charge clients a fee to hold their cash. The policy by Bank of New York Mellon Corp. will apply to some large depositors to hold their cash, reports the Wall Street Journal.

In a letter reviewed by WSJ, Mellon advised that it will charge 0.13% plus an additional fee if the one-month Treasury yield dips below zero on depositors that have accounts with an average monthly balance of $50 million “per client relationship.”

“In the past month, we have seen a growing level of deposits on our balance sheet from clients seeking a safe-haven in light of the global interest rate and credit environment,” the bank told the Journal in an emailed statement.

If this is in the uk then this is a direct tax on the people by a private corporation, because we cannot legally earn money without a bank account.

Easy solution. Don't put your money in banks. Don't play their game.

That's the only way to beat the house.

Oh and stop paying taxes. Cut off the life blood.

So much for the green shoots when the bankers are beting that their .13% rake is better than how much you'll lose in the stock, bond and commodities markets.

Its been like this here for years.
But now they have cracked down on them charging ludicrous fees for shit.
Here you can pay $4 a month and have unlimited transactions.
Or you can pay nothing, and have only a few transactions, after that they charge you per transaction.

Re: Banks To Charge You For Holding Your Own Money
I am not sure why the article just mentions one bank. I had my money in "US Bank" until recently when they began to charge me $7 a month for keeping my money in the bank. I decided to close my account and I refused to pay the first $7 they charged me. They eventually waived it because they have a policy where a account needs to be at a balance of $0 to close it, and I sure as hell wasn't going to deposit $7 just to close my account.

I should have explained that. Maybe they don't have those down under. A place that will cash your check for a % fee. Usualy around 3 or 4 percent.

Yeah but you don't have to pay it they have deals see.
Like if you keep over a certain amount in the account they give you everything free.

Or you can have a low transaction account where you just draw out the cash 3-4 times a month and it costs nothing.
Or pay a monthly fee and can use 1000000 transactions if you like.

It would make sense that, if you keep under a certain amount in the bank, then they would make little profit from it.
Therefore why would they give you access to free services?
Remember its a private bank a private company they don't "have" to do business with you.

Hmmm. We have payday loan places over here. I suppose they'd take a cheque. Trick would be to convince your employer to pay you with a cheque rather than an automated "set and forget" direct deposit system. I used to get paid by cheque, but that was 1996.

Ya that's the main issue. Very few employers (at least here in Canada) even give you the option of having an actual cheque issued anymore. Many places won't even hire you unless you have a chequing account they can deposit into.

They couldn't legaly hold you to it anyway. You were never under any contractual obligation to pay that. A contract's terms must be fixed and certain. That bit of bullshit you signed to open the account was not a contract. You can tell them to shove any bullshit they spring on you and walk away at any time.

Our dollars might be similar, but the cost of living over here is incredibly high compared to you guys and your US bros down below.

When I first came to GLP I used to hear Americans talking about how they get paid $11/hr and talk about their car and house payments etc etc etc and I'd just think "WTF? How can you possibly LIVE off that???"

Not sure that's the case anymore, but that was back in 2004.

I guess I see what you mean. Funny thing about the US, $11 an hour can be good or bad. My brother was living in Oakland, California back until about 2005. You couldn't live any decent kind of life there on any less than than about $20 an hour. I visited him there once about 2002 and gave a bum a dollar to ride the BART train home from work. That bum was a welder making $18 an hour. I told him that if he was living in Detroit he'd be driving a Cadillac.

My brother left Detroit to go to Oakland. In Detroit if you made $20 you lived like a fucking king.

We don't have check cashing places, years ago you used to be able to cash a cheque at the supermarket.
And get some extra cash.
It no longer exists to much fraud.
Cheques here aren't used often anymore its all electronic transfer.
Used to be you'd give a deposit cheque when buying property using a bank cheque or even a car.
Now you just put it in the account its in the next day.

That's stupid though, because here $18 an hour is considered a not bad wage not great but not bad better than average.
But you couldn't live on it in any good way because the cost of living is ridiculous.
Clearly the cost of living in the US is lower than here.
The Bum was probably just a gambler or drunk or drug addict and blew his cash.

Are you sure? Could you pay rent/mortgage payments on $18/hr? And I don't mean bording up with other housemates and shit like that. I'm talking actual living on your own getting by each day.

When I first started in the workforce I was on $17/hr. I lived well because I still lived with my parents at that stage. Doubt I could've afforded to move out and pay rent/water/electricity/phone/food/clothes on that.
