Re: I work for the US government and we have confirmed that asteroid 2005 yu55 will indeed strike the earth
check out this site. [link to simulator.down2earth.eu] Gives estimates for damage. a 400 meter rock hitting earth won't do shit. Doom over folks. I amped up the velocity of this model to 20km just for extra doom potential. Had the asteroid come in at a typical 45 degree angle and it hit the atlantic ocean just off the coast near New York. Damage minimal and possible tsunami of a couple inches to a foot.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3190155

I suggest you visit the Arizona meteorcrater website. The meteor that hit there was estimated to be only 150 feet wide and caused a crater 1 mile across, 2.5 miles in circumference and 550 feet deep. If you don't think an asteroid nearly 10x that size "won't do shit", then you are more ignorant than you appear...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1579668

i have also used a couple sim programs and highly overestimated speed and angle entrys, water depth, it wont do much at all going into the sea, a few higher than usual waves in a couple spots maybe that would be about it.

this ones not to bad on all info

Yes, the thread title is correct.

Sometime around 7pm EST Asteroid 2005 YU55 will strike in the north atlantic ocean.

I can tell you this; No emergency measures are being taken, evacuations, etc.

President Obama , however, Will be going on air at approx. 2pm EST to warn the world.

Im bring you this news because I want to make a difference.

The media has been instructed not to interview me.

If you live on the eastern seaboard, of any countries in the atlantic ocean, it would behoove you to find your way inland as far as possible.

The wall of water will be over 1,000 feet high and moving at miles per second.

Well it was going to happen, but now that it's posted here on GLP, it'll be another no-show, much like that hyped 10/28 crap. Oh well, thanks for doing your part for humanity.

I calculated the orbit of the asteroid using only amateur observations of it, no professional observatory data at all. The results closely agreed with the official orbit. I took a quick glance at the ephemeris of that orbit and it showed the asteroid missing earth by about ~242,000 km if I remember right, slightly closer than the official orbit, but still a safe distance away. I'll be making a video showing the result in detail later tonight. Suffice it to say, the asteroid is not going to hit us.

I'll be posting the full details of the results tonight, including all the orbital elements I calculated, which is something you have failed to provide. If it's going to hit us, then post the "true" orbital elements that show it impacting the atlantic like you said it would... For extra points, also post the astrometric readings which produced those orbital elements.

I'm glad this stuff is fun for you, because it's really not worth your time.

If you want a little more practice, there's a PhD over here saying something is going to hit near Haiti. You know, the Pacific Ocean Haiti?

check out this site.

I suggest you visit the Arizona meteorcrater website. The meteor that hit there was estimated to be only 150 feet wide and caused a crater 1 mile across, 2.5 miles in circumference and 550 feet deep. Depends on a lot of variables, how far offshore it hits, depth of the water, etc. An impact a couple hundred miles offshore of a rock that large could potentially devastate the coastline with a tsunami wave on the same order of magnitude as the one that devastated Indonesia in 2004. It would be a major disaster. Not the end of the world, but if you lived on the coastline being affected it sure would feel like it.
