[link to simulator.down2earth.eu] Gives estimates for damage. a 400 meter rock hitting earth won't do shit. Doom over folks. I amped up the velocity of this model to 20km just for extra doom potential. Had the asteroid come in at a typical 45 degree angle and it hit the atlantic ocean just off the coast near New York. Damage minimal and possible tsunami of a couple inches to a foot. |

Quoting: Mike Smith 1557609 Sometime around 7pm EST Asteroid 2005 YU55 will strike in the north atlantic ocean. I calculated the orbit of the asteroid using only amateur observations of it, no professional observatory data at all. The results closely agreed with the official orbit. I took a quick glance at the ephemeris of that orbit and it showed the asteroid missing earth by about ~242,000 km if I remember right, slightly closer than the official orbit, but still a safe distance away. I'll be making a video showing the result in detail later tonight. Suffice it to say, the asteroid is not going to hit us. Last Edited by Astromut on 10/28/2011 02:39 PM |

The meteor that hit there was estimated to be only 150 feet wide and caused a crater 1 mile across, 2.5 miles in circumference and 550 feet deep. If you don't think an asteroid nearly 10x that size "won't do shit", then you are more ignorant than you appear... |

What's your address and phone number? Since JPL isn't the sole proprietor of every telescope in the world, how is that relevant. Can, but won't? What's the point of that? The 10 Questions: 1. How reliable is the source of the claim? 2. Does the source make similar claims? 3. Have the claims been verified by somebody else? 4. Does this fit with the way the world works? 5. Has anyone tried to disprove the claim? 6. Where does the preponderance of evidence point? 7. Is the claimant playing by the rules of science? 8. Is the claimant providing positive evidence? 9. Does the new theory account for as many phenomena as the old theory? 10. Are personal beliefs driving the claim? Reaching for the sky makes you taller. Hi!
