Qantas Australia grounds its ENTIRE FLEET.... all QANTAS-based plans halted, passengers stranded

This is HUGE.

I can't believe this has happened on the same day it was announced the CEO got a 2 million dollar bonus.

Aircraft currently in the air will complete the sectors they are operating. However, there will be no further Qantas domestic departures or international departures anywhere in the world. This will have an estimated financial impact on Qantas of $20 million per day.

The lock-out will continue until the ALAEA, the TWU and AIPA drop the extreme demands that have made it impossible for agreements to be reached.

Jetstar flights, QantasLink flights and Qantas flights across the Tasman operated by Jetconnect will continue. Express Freighters Australia and Atlas Freighters will also continue to operate.

Requirements for employees are as follows:

- Until the lock-out commences, all employees are required at work as normal and will be paid.
- Once the lock-out commences:
- employees who are locked out will not be required at work and will not be paid.
- employees working overseas will not be locked out and will continue to be paid.
- all other employees are required at work and will be paid as normal.

Customers booked on Qantas flights should not go to the airport until further notice.

The creep got a 70% pay-rise.

Qantas has defended its decision to grant its CEO Alan Joyce a pay rise of up to 71 per cent amid angry scenes at the airline's annual general meeting.

In a vote that seemingly defied a fiery mood, 97 per cent of shareholders voted in favour of the increase at the airline's AGM in Sydney on Friday.

Shareholders were told Mr Joyce earned $3.8 million last year. The pay rise will see his remuneration package pushed to more than $5 million.

``We are locking out until the unions withdraw their extreme claim and reach agreement with us,'' Qantas Mr Joyce told a press conference on Saturday.

Imagine the cost of having all those planes of the ground.

I seriously think the CEO should be getting seen by a psych as this will probably kill the airline. How on earth you can argue that the workers can't have payrises while you are taking a hefty one yourself is beyond belief. He didn't hit any of the targets that were set for the year yet he still got a huge payrise. It totally sucks.

Not freakin commie unions idiot. Qantas has offshored its maintence programme to Malaysia , instead of having the planes checked by Australian qualified aircraft maintence crews .
Ever since they did that they have had one safety issue after another . It went from being the safest airlines in the world to one I woulld not fly in due to sub standard safety maaintence by offshore labour crews .

This would cause quite a few people to freak out, as they wouldn't know if they're already in the air... land and are forced to disembark, and connecting flights are unavailable because everyone who is ALREADY at the airport have flooded other airlines.......

Honestly , from what has been happening over the last two years with that airline that went from being one of the best to one of the worst ...I started to think they wanted to kill off the airline.
Its been very obvious . But for what reason ??? what little conspiracy is playing itself out here and who are the players ?

The CEO is saying it's because of the unions asking for Jetstar pilots to get paid the same as Qantas pilots which they can't do as it would kill the airline. He says they have no alternative but to do this for the long term viability of the airline.

Govt. should intervene ..

The Australian minister for transport, Anthony Albanese, said the government would take action to intervene in the dispute.

"We are very concerned about Qantas' actions, of which we were notified only mid-afternoon, with no advance notice from Qantas at any stage," he said.

"The government is making an urgent application to Fair Work Australia [an industrial court] to terminate all industrial action at Qantas. This will be aimed at both actions by unions and by Qantas management."

All the flight attendants into Melbourne had their shirts buttoned down to damn near their navels, they "helped you buckle you seat belt", and they gave you lots of good beer.
