Could the yu55 asteroid collide with the moon?
Could it? Because I know it's gonna be about 200,000 miles away from earth but what about the moon? It's also going to be traveling in the moons gravitational pull.. Anyone know anything about this?

Looking at the animation here

[link to earthsky.org]

it seems impossible to hit the moon.

The only way for it to hit the moon is a big change in its orbit and I guess the moon's gravity is not strong enought to do that.

What else could change its orbit?

Re: Could the yu55 asteroid collide with the moon?
Richard Hoagland was on a radio show last night and he related the numbers 19.5 to comet elenin and yu55 and how the asteroid is suppose to fly by the earth at 1950 GMT. According to Hoagland, a "reliable source" said that Goldstone Deep Space Comm has been pinging the asteroid and apparently the asteroid has changed its trajectory and it looks like it could either hit the moon or will experience a "close fly-by". yeahsure

Pretty foolish of him to make a statement that will be proven to have been a lie in only a few days.

Guy's got no shame.

No. The Moon's gravitational pull is part of the calculations (although not in the JPL orbital diagrams people here use).

It will approach to 240,000 km.

EDIT: For comparison, the Moon will be 406,000 km from Earth then.
