I can see this going REALLY badly. Imagine inserting massive vibrations into the most dangerous fault on earth. It may not have been called that prior to Japan's quake but I think it would rank up there among the top 3 now that it has shown an ability to produce such a tremendous quake and tsunami. Messing with this fault can allow water into the fault, allow magma to escape, allow gases to escape, cause vibrations in the rock that will travel for miles and miles underwater and can cause hamonic vibrations of sorts that can impact the seismic and volcanic regions surrounding it. |

From the original article I posted in this thread: "The scientific rationale for the expedition, officially called the Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project, is detailed in a 2009 report promoting rapid-response drilling through fault lines as soon as possible after an earthquake in which the ground slips by more than one metre. The Tohoku event set a new record for the greatest amount of slippage ever observed — a whopping 50 meters — making it an ideal target." Holy freakin crap! 50 meters?????? |

Japan's sea floor is riddled with magma chambers, dormant volcanoes are just a skip away...and they're about to allow sea water down some 3000 feet into the sea floor. Hold On! I'm in California and this is freakin me out! |

Japan has lied about everything from the point of the quake until now. How do we know they're being honest about their reasons for doing this exploration? Who's to say they're not trying to further cover up the disaster? Who's to say they're not trying to cause more activity to cover up the damage they've already done? And, who's in charge of the oceans in that area? Do they have the right to do such a risky drilling in international waters, if that's where this fault line is located? |

"The Chikyu will drill down 1 kilometer through the fault, and drop a string of temperature sensors down the hole. By tracking temperatures for one to three years — much longer than has been attempted before — researchers should be able to calculate the total amount of heat that was generated by the quake. That will provide them with the resistance forces felt in the fault during the slip, filling in a blank in models of earthquake dynamics. "This is a key missing ingredient," says Jean-Philippe Avouac, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, who is not involved in the project." Quoting: Idgits [link to www.scientificamerican.com] This fault is STILL experiencing aftershocks from the March quake according to some seismologists. If nothing else, it's still very active period. These people are going to drill down with a very large bit into the fault over 3000 feet. That vibration, slippage, intrusion, etc., in my opinion, can cause extreme havoc. I surely hope this will not cause another quake to occur. I think this is extremely dangerous and have a feeling they're going to seriously regret it! I agree. And I wouldn't want to be the ones at the "ship" end of the drill bit! |

Quoting: Idgits I can think of dozens of ways this could go badly. The most likely scenario is an after shock breaks the drill stem in the hole. Does anybody know how a mile long piece of pipe stuck in a fault will effect it? This could change the dynamics of the fault shift. It could make an earthquake more likely, or less likely. Do you want to be there to find out? I'm glad I have a mountain range between me and the Pacific ocean. Driller are just beginning to understand how frac'ing is effecting the earth, now they want to mess with active faults. Good thinking! Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Japan has long been suspected of being a suicidal nation. It doesn't take much to imagine their thinking. Perhaps you're right. They may very well be trying to set some sort of prophecy in motion or maybe they're just seriously deranged and not capable of truly understanding the dangers they're about to impart on the earth. |

Do you remember some talk here shortly after the big EQ happened, that some Israeli men (Mossad?) were seen leaving Japan a few days before the big event? There was also some buzz about a nuclear device being used to trigger that big event? Was that phase I, & now phase II is about to be implemented.?? I'm afraid my conspiracy mind is all abuzz with this new info. You or I & most people here know enough to not drill down in such a seismically sensitive area, so why are they.....this is beyond high risk, & my antennas are buzzing with alarm. |
