heres my guess:
Because we are in the process of a pole reversal on the sun, this means the sun will slow down. Earth will slow down as well and then ultimately stop for a bit (not too long-- I would guess just a few hours). The sun will escentially move "backwards" and set in the east. This means it will not rise for some at all. This will continue until the sun rises in the west. It is during this time that we will have the 3 days of darkness.

If it were to cause a slowing of the rotation of the earth, everyone could experience what would seem 3 days of darkness as measured by the clocks we now use. Although, one could argue the time would be less than that if one adheres to the theory that time is a measure of change and not duration. That may be a whole other thread though.
