Poorest poor in US hits new record: 1 in 15 people
Less than 50% mods:

About 20.5 million Americans, or 6.7 percent of the U.S. population, make up the poorest poor, defined as those at 50 percent or less of the official poverty level. Those living in deep poverty represent nearly half of the 46.2 million people scraping by below the poverty line. In 2010, the poorest poor meant an income of $5,570 or less for an individual and $11,157 for a family of four.

That 6.7 percent share is the highest in the 35 years that the Census Bureau has maintained such records, surpassing previous highs in 2009 and 1993 of just over 6 percent.

Broken down by states, 40 states and the District of Columbia had increases in the poorest poor since 2007, and none saw decreases. The District of Columbia ranked highest at 10.7 percent, followed by Mississippi and New Mexico. Nevada had the biggest jump, rising from 4.6 percent to 7 percent.

The repubs were 100% in favor of repealing Glass-Steagall.
Clinton, like Obama, was essentially republikan-lite.

Re: Poorest poor in US hits new record: 1 in 15 people
So if we went back to people helping other people, like used to happen before socialist communist NWO lies.
Then these people may have a real chance of getting back on their feet.
Instead we take money from those on their feet, and give it to them, which just makes them think they have a free ride.
And destroys the economy and everyone elses lives.
A downward spiral of destruction.

You know before big government, their used to be towns, villages.
And if someone was down on their luck, a drunk, or something like that.
The people used to come together and try to help them out out of the goodness of their hearts.
And the people getting help knew how much of a gracious thing it was, and never took advantage of it..

We need to get back to people helping each other, not some corporate big government communist lie "pretending" to help people.

Re: Poorest poor in US hits new record: 1 in 15 people
OK. So now let me completely retransmit the OP for everyone:

About 20.5 million Americans, which happens to be 6.7 percent of the U.S. population, qualify as "the poorest poor". They are defined as those who are making an income which falls within the bottom half of the poverty line. This number happens to make up nearly half the total population of those living in poverty.

Just recently, in 2010, to be a part of the 'poorest poor' was to make, at most, only 5 and a half thousand dollars a year. For a family of four, one qualified as the 'poorest poor' if they made at or less than only 11 thousand a year.

In the 35 years of recording poverty levels, the Census Bureau found that while previous highs were over 6%, in years such as 1993 and 2009, this year happens to be breaking a new record.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2780920

Compare to the original:

About 20.5 million Americans, or 6.7 percent of the U.S. population, make up the poorest poor, defined as those at 50 percent or less of the official poverty level. Those living in deep poverty represent nearly half of the 46.2 million people scraping by below the poverty line. In 2010, the poorest poor meant an income of $5,570 or less for an individual and $11,157 for a family of four.

wtf does that mean?

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2780920
Do you really mean "OR", here, or do you mean, "Which happens to be"? Because the latter is appropriate.

make up the poorest poor, defined as those at 50 percent or less of the official poverty level.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2780920
Ok, now, wtf does that mean? Let me see if I can break this down:

6.7 of the US population is very very poor (which you call "poorest of the poor".)

You define "poorest of the poor" as "at 50 percent or less of the official poverty level"?

Now that makes no sense during a quick read through. God, come on, man.

I'm guessing you mean "they are making an income which falls within the bottom half of the poverty line."

Those living in deep poverty represent nearly half of the 46.2 million people scraping by below the poverty line.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2780920
Jesus Christ. You mean, "They happen to make up nearly half the total population of those living in poverty."

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2780920
Wow, exact numbers, because we need to know about that 7 dollar difference there. You mean, "Just recently, in 2010, to be a part of the 'poorest poor' was to make, at most, only 5 and a half thousand dollars a year. For a family of four, one qualified as the 'poorest poor' if they made at or less than only 11 thousand a year."

You probably don't. What you mean is "In the 35 years of recording poverty levels, the Census Bureau found that while previous highs were over 6%, in years such as 1993 and 2009, this year happens to be breaking a new record."

Much of the income fall-off might be from those who used to make interest on their savings and investments, who aren't making interest anymore. Like old people who have low income, but still have quite a bit in the bank.

Re: Poorest poor in US hits new record: 1 in 15 people
I can understand those numbers more today than I ever thought I would. My husband and I are both real estate attorneys and for 15 years have made a very comfortable living for ourselves practicing law. We always had enough money left over after expenses (which included a home in a high end neighborhood and nice cars) to enjoy fine dining whenever we wanted, fun family getaways and cool clothes for us and our kids.

My father died when I was a child and I inherited stock in a large bank from his estate. That trust paid for my legal education and was all the available credit we would ever need to do whatever we could want. Whenever the economy would rise and fall over the years, that bank stock was always there for me and I grew to rely on my false sense of security in it's infallibility. So in '08 when the economy took a turn for the worst, the first thing we noticed was a steep decline in the value of that bank's stock. Didn't see that one coming. *sigh*

And because our law firm dealt primarily with real estate transactions, that business began to slowly taper off as well. At the time we didn't worry too much that it would stop altogether, just that there would be a "lull". We were wrong. We tried to hang in there as long a we could and in the meantime we went ahead and put our home on the market to see if it could sell for it's high appraised value before the market collapsed altogether. We had no doubt in our mind that our home would sell before the bottom fell out and we could be debt free to ride this bad economic wave til things picked back up.

Fast forward to today...we lost our home in March of this year through foreclosure to the bank and we have NO income except what we are able to make from working with our neighbor's "asset management company" (we help clean out foreclosed homes for banks...irony) which we view as our penance (lol). We cannot get unemployment because we were self-employed and the only way we can feed our kids is to get on food-stamps and the free lunch program at their school. Thank goodness we don't owe any money on our cars or they would be gone as well. I just pray neither of them quit running or need any expensive repairs.

If you had ever told me I would be on food stamps, I would have laughed in our face! But I am grateful that we have that available as much as I used to think badly of people that were on them before, viewing them as freeloaders... needless to say, my opinion has changed.

I have been coming to GLP since '08 (can't remember how I found it) so at least we woke up while we still had a little money left to buy some storable food and survival supplies but we don't want to touch them until the grocery store shelves are empty. I admit I wish for doom just to stop the "ride" and give us some chance to catch our breath. I don't wish anyone any harm (not that kind of doom) but just that the system as we know it would freeze for a while and stop the creditors phone calls.

Anyway, I just had to get that off my chest. Three years ago I had assets worth over two million dollars...today I don't even have money to fill up my car with gas. This SUX!

Re: Poorest poor in US hits new record: 1 in 15 people
Here is a hypothetical for you. Let's just say that "Country X" exists. Everyone in Country X makes the exact same amount of money at every point in their lives, gets the exact same raises from their employers at the exact same times during their employ, gets married at the same age, saves the exact same amount of money, invests the exact same amount of money at the same time and gets the exact same returns on those investments their entire adult lives. Everyone starts by working part time at 18, taking full time jobs when they turn 21, buying houses of identical price, interest rate and mortgage term at 35, retiring at 65 and dieing at 85. Everyone the exact same their entire lives.

Statistical data on income would show a huge income disparity between the top 10% of earners and the bottom 10% of earners. It would also show a huge accumulated wealth disparity between the top 10% of wealth holders and the bottom 10% of wealth holders. It would show that the top 10% of income earners were accumulating wealth at a much higher rate than the bottom 10%. It would also show those who had retired, and had actually accumulated the most wealth of any income group, as having incomes of $0 and thus being counted in the statistical category of the bottom 10% of income earners.

Out of this raw data alone, one could make sweeping generalizations about wealth and income disparities within the population of Country X, and all kinds of claims of "unfairness" and inherent inequities in the system even though every single citizen of Country X had exactly the same amount of accumulated wealth and income at every point in their lives. The data alone would not be evidence of systemic inequities but could be presented and interpreted as such by those who wished to use it in such a way, even though every single citizen of Country X was in identical financial circumstances at every single point in their adult lives.

The data would not show that those in the bottom 10% of income earners were working part time or had very little accumulated time in the workforce compared to the top 10%. It would also not show that those in the top 10% had accumulated their wealth over a period of almost 50 years, nor would it show that some of those included in the bottom 10% of income earners were actually retired persons who were also in the top 10% of wealth holders. Nowhere would the data among compared groups show that every citizen of Country X was living in total economic equality.

The left routinely cherry-picks data point out of income data in an attempt to make claims that the data they are presenting proves systemic wealth disparity but they generally fail to mention mitigating factors with and between groups or the fact that people move in and out of income groups throughout their life spans. It is not, as the left would have you believe, the same people remaining in any single income group throughout their entire adult lives. This Yahoo wealth data is complete BULLSHIT!

Generally, the setasides and affirmative action for special groups like blacks and Hispanics tends to harden the heart. A lot. Who would want to help these people, when they have legal advantages too? Not to promote exclusive thinking, but it's a fact that one thinks "heck that would just make the enemy stronger" and they become the enemy because of their legal advantages.
