It's about 15 degrees above the ecliptic, and it was VERY bright when the sun was setting- almost just as bright as Jupiter. Could this thing be coming in earlier? Or could this thing actually be MASSIVE? I checked google sky and the only thing in the area was Venus, but Venus shouldn't have been this high above the ecliptic. Quoting: Oh Tits Maybe I'm mistaking for another star but I have never noticed this before. Has anyone else seen this? I live in southern Indiana. I would get my scope on it but I live in an apartment complex and I can't get a good vantage point from here You live in southern Indiana - so do we. I have noticed it too. A bright star I've never seen before. And it stays bright right until dawn. Not quite sure what it is. |

I am a Jupiter junkie and love checking her out on the scope :) Last Edited by Oh Tits on 11/07/2011 06:55 PM You can call it chronic paranoia... I call it critical thinking |

Venus appeared to be maybe a degree or so above the ecliptic at this time. It seemed to be WSW, very near Venus-except about 15 degrees above it, almost directly inside the constellation Ophiuchus (well according to Google.....) You can call it chronic paranoia... About a quarter mile wide (400 meters) – round and dark – 2005 YU55 will be 198,000 miles (319,000 kilometers) from Earth’s surface. It will be closer than the orbit of the moon. What will it look like? Will you see it as it sweeps past? |

I'm from Hawaii, and it wasn't Jupiter, because this bright object was on the horizon when the moon was overhead...I saw Jupiter next to the moon, so whatever this was, wasn't Jupiter...was SUPER bright when I saw it last night. However, in other news, apparently the space station flew over Hawaii last night and it was crazy bright and going pretty fast. You could only see it for about 5 minutes before it was no longer visible. |
