Does anyone know why the broadcast ended an hour + before the asteroid's closest approach? I was under the impression we'd get to watch it on the that site with commentary.... :/ I feel a bit cheated, lol.

The closest approach is 23:28 UTC, right?

I'm using this and also the NASA RT simulation in another window.

[link to solarsystem.nasa.gov]
I have all the information I need about it's position, speed and distance in realtime, a 3d graphical simulation of the event and the Slooh view of the actual event.

I love living in the 21st century.

Now I'm brewing up some coffee, making a bowl and getting ready to watch the show.

When you actually have a visual representation of the positions of Earth and YU55 you really get a sense of just how close it really is.

One day an asteroid is going to be too close... it's inevitable really.

How come the count down is 4 hours when the close fly by is in an hour and 20?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4936232

I think prime-time for the fly-by/impact is around 8:00 PM Eastern. So the clock says about 3 hrs. 36 mins from now. So it sounds about right.

I'm thinking I'll go outside around 8-9 PM and see if I can see anything. It looks pretty clear out here in eastern WV.

It is 6:28 EST. The next flyby the will be reporting will be of the flyby of the moon.

However I have no fricken clue why they would end the broadcast Prior to the asteroids closest approach, and they gave no explanation.

Let me get this straight.

The telescopes they have can zoom so far in on the moon that they can theoretically see an explosion on the surface

BUT

The Asteroid set to whiz by Earth closer than the moon is seen as a white spec?

Shit ain't adding up.

GLP is not showing us their live feed.

I was really really counting on GLP, as there would be less suspicion of tampering... just a raw feed from telescope to all of us on our devices.

Now with this Live show, it feels controlled and I'm getting the feeling they're not going to give us the real deal.

SO Disappointed you guys :(

wow the responses in this thread?!
wtf

the page clearly said how long till the live view.
before that it showed recordings (duh)
after the live show started a new countdown started for the next live viewing (duh)

i saw the live show but couldnt see the comet is there wasnt like a circle around it or anything.

the show lasted a good lil while but i only watched it occacionaly and didnt see a thing.

so no you dont have to pay for something when it says "going live in 0:00 and yes if indeed you want a membership you have to pay.

its like glp. just cuz you can pay to be a full member it doesnt mean you cant see the live show.

It went from a live broadcast, the host was giving his opinion on what happened to the missing belt on Jupiter and BAM back to the recorded looped video/audio.

At this very second it's still on the pre-recording.

Is that not suspect?

WTH is going on?

Were they told to take the live broadcast down?

Was the question off limits considering they had a PHD Scientist (the one who discovered 2005yu55) as a guest who would probably know what he was talking about?

I put off registering for classes today for this bullcrap.

The closest approach to the earth during YU55's flyby is at 23:28.

Use this calculator to determine your exact time. Mine here on the east coast is 18:28 or 6:28.

Something simply is not right.

Maybe it's too low? I just set Starry Night to the Canary Islands and YU55 is only 15° above the horizon and will be below it in three hours.

Anyone have another telescope?

Yes, you're right. I got confused with this too, because it was supposed to be at 8.28 AM in Japan. Also, in the link the above poster gave us it says "time to closest approach: 46 min."

BTW, that's also a good link, thanks!

I for one am totally confused.

All day everyone and everything said 5.28 EST which is 4.28 CST, where I am.

NOW, it's 6.28 EST which naturally is 5.28 CST.

Which is it?

Why did the damned thing end like that?

IF anyone cares, Hoagy will be live on Camelot TV in fifteen minutes @ [link to www.livestream.com]
