"A team from the Clay Center Observatory in Brookline, Massachusetts, will use the facility’s 25-inch telescope to track and image the asteroid. The team anticipates locking onto the asteroid well before 6:00 p.m. EST and tracking it until approximately 3:00 a.m. EST the following morning."

"The Clay Center Observatory in Brookline, Mass., planned an all-night viewing party so children and parents could peer through research-grade telescopes and listen to lectures. The asteroid can't be detected with the naked eye."

Under the screen it says:

Asteroid show #2 will begin at 6:00 PM PST - 02:00 UTC - we are pulling a feed from AZ - Also, we may have Dr. McMillan back as a guest.

OK, so that's 9:00 PM Eastern Time for beginning of coverage. That sound right based on the above message on the site?

Are we getting invaded? What's all those steaks? lol
 Quoting: KateCan

The streaks are stars. The asteroid is moving at a different rate than the stars. The telescope is following the asteroid so the stars appear as streaks.

The streaks are stars due to the asteroid moving at such speed I assume.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4960977

yeah but the stars in the background arent streaking like that
 Quoting: MrOysterhead

YEAH!!! what the hell is that?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4750817

BUMP! So if the streaks are the stars what are the bright spots in the background! If the bright spots in the background are stars, what are the streaks! The only explanation... Frankie was right! Fleet incoming. "Landing formation for moonbase Alpha"

i heard 6:30pm est

what gives here?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1336768

It is 6:28 EST. The next flyby the will be reporting will be of the flyby of the moon.

However I have no fricken clue why they would end the broadcast Prior to the asteroids closest approach, and they gave no explanation.

They can't be that dumb to just sign off with a huge audience, really stupid move to acquiring a new potential paying member opportunity. JMO
 Quoting: KateCan

They clearly stated at the beginning of the show that they would run for an hour. They got busy talking and taking calls, and before you know it, time was up.

Re: Live Telescope Stream Covering the YU55 FLYBY - - SLOOH Observatory-- Check This at 15:55 glptime
Alright, the slooh site says about 15 mins...til coverage begins.

I'm in eastern WV and just went out and looked. The moon is roughly south-east at about a 45 degree elevation. There is a planet? at about 7:00 o'clock that is fairly close to the moon.

The way the diagrams look, this thing should be traveling 'above' the moon, so higher than 45 degrees, maybe almost straight up, and it should be traveling right to left.

I looked all over and don't see anything yet. But with the way the moon is 'shining' (reflecting), there ought to be SOME light hitting this thing enough so that we ought to be able to see it, right? I hope so.

Any ideas as to where in relation to the moon and relative direction, please give us your opinion.

Re: Live Telescope Stream Covering the YU55 FLYBY - - SLOOH Observatory-- Check This at 15:55 glptime
This is what I don't get. Description:

ear-Earth Asteroid (NEA) "2005 YU55", a dark, nearly spherical chunk of primordial space rock around 400 metres in diameter, will be making a close fly-by to Earth at 23:28UT on the 8th November 2011.

OK, so here in eastern WV, it is -5 hours from UT. So, that's 18:28 Eastern Time. BUT, that's 6:28 PM! So I must be missing something since it's already past 9 PM now.

I just hope we can see this thing on their scope with maybe the moon in view with it.
