I'm about 1 hour out of Melbourne and I heard this too!! It did sound like a jet. A very low flying jet. I can't hear it now though!! I thought it sounded like the plane was going to come down! Was going to go outside and look but there is so much cloud cover today.

I would say it's approximately north.

No,I havn't but this is definately skyward not ground based.
And it's still audible but definately getting fainter now.
