When I looked to see if I could see Yu55 the other night, I saw a V shaped set of lights; FIRST moving up from the horizon toward the moon, then STOPPING !

An A-hole also said Jupiter, even though I said it had bright, round objects hanging off the outer sides of the V.

There is NO limit to the stupidity of shills on this site, and they are MORE arrogant every week with their OBVIOUS LIES/DISINFORMATION !

But, the unintelligent/frightened WANT to BELIEVE them, and it KILLS any rational discussion/observation of the FACTS presented .

A few weeks ago, my son and I saw something similar to what you're describing.
It was v-shaped and there were 3 or 4 lights on each arm of the v.
It was moving across from east to west and it suddenly broke apart at the point and each section moved in a different direction, but a small round light appeared from the break point and went in a third direction.

My son pretty much said WTF and ran in the house. The thought of ET's freaks him out. :)

Perhaps some definitions are in order. The Earth coordinates are in latitude and longitude and referenced to the Earth's rotation axis. The North and South pole mark the position of the rotation axis. If you draw an imaginary line out of the North pole until in intersects what is called the celestial sphere (which is an imaginary surface containing all of the background stars) you reach the North star, Polaris. The North Star never seems to move throughout the day or year. It actually makes a very small circle since its position does not line up exactly with the rotation axis. The Earth's equator is a line on the surface of the Earth halfway between the North and South poles (we assume the Earth is a perfect sphere).

The apparent motion of the Sun in the sky is defined to be the ecliptic. Once every year the Sun traces out the ecliptic against the background stars. Again, the Sun's apparent motion defines the ecliptic. In reality it is because the Earth orbits the Sun so the plane of the ecliptic is defined by the Earth's orbit. Coordinates along the ecliptic are ecliptic longitude and ecliptic latitude.

The rotation axis of the Earth is tilted with respect to the ecliptic plane. This is the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth formally called the Earth's obliquity. There are small annual motions called the Chandler wobble that causes the obliquity to change throughout the year by a very small amount.

So if you watch the apparent position of the Sun at local noon every day you that in the northern hemisphere the Sun is high in the sky during the summer months and low in the winter months due to the fact the Earth’s is tilted with respect to the ecliptic. The Sun will be seen to vary by 47 degrees in apparent height at local noon-the extremes seen at the winter solstice and summer solstice. This also changes the position of sunrise and sunset throughout the year. For the northern hemisphere, sunset is in the southwest in winter and southeast in summer. At the equinoxes (meaning equal night) the Sun rises due east and sets due west.

There is a sky coordinate system also and is known as the celestial coordinate system and measured in Right Ascension and Declination. Declination corresponds exactly to the Earth’s latitude. If you are 43 degree north the point directly overhead has a declination of 43 degrees. At 50 degrees south latitude the point overhead is -50 degrees declination. Right ascension is a little harder to define. Right Ascension is an hours system and the sky is divided in 24 hours. 0 hour is called the First Point of Ares (so called because it occurs when the Sun is in the constellation Ares) and corresponds to the vernal equinox. This is defined as the position in the sky where the Sun crosses the equator of the Earth in is annual motion. If you stand facing south and look toward the Sun at the vernal equinox you are looking at the first point of Ares. Right ascension would then increase to your left, toward the East. All stars have coordinates in Right Ascension and Declination.

The Earth also precesses. If you watch a top spinning on the floor you will see the rotation axis of the top traces out a small circle. This is the precession circle. While a top might do this in a few seconds the Earth takes 26,000 years for a complete precessional circle to occur. The Earth is not exactly like a top, one of the rotation poles is not fixed to a floor, but if you study the physics, the motion is the same. Formally, to change the position of the celestial pole you have to exert a torque on the Earth. In absence of a torque conservation of angular momentum keeps the Earth’s orientation the same throughout the year and pointed to the same point in space, the North Star.

Precession also causes the First Point of Ares to move. There is a slow drift of the vernal equinox because of precession. This means that if you use stellar coordinates from 1800 and point your telescope at those coordinates you will not see a star in the catalog. Because of that, all coordinates of a star are tagged with what is called an epoch. The current Epoch is called J2000. Everything is referenced to the position of the Sun (the vernal equinox) on January 1, 2000. You will also see B1950 which is referenced to the vernal equinox of 1950 and B1900 for the vernal equinox of 1900. B1850 and so on. About every 50 years new catalogs are produced with updated coordinates. If you know the epoch of the coordinates it is an easy matter, using a set of equations, to update the coordinates to todays epoch.

All of the planets and the Moon are seen to travel close to the ecliptic. But not exactly on the ecliptic. The Moon is inclined about 5 degrees to the ecliptic. Mercury is 7 degrees. Jupiter about 1.3 degrees. Pluto about 17 degrees. This causes the planets and the Moon to sometimes be higher in the sky than the Sun and sometimes lower. The tilt also explains why we do not have solar and lunar eclipses every single month. Sometimes the Moon is above the Sun, sometimes below. Every once in a while it crosses the ecliptic just in front of the Sun for a solar eclipse and a full Moon at crossing causes a lunar eclipse.

The defines, crudely, the apparent position of objects in the sky but there still is the issue of periods. When can you see the planets again? When considering the apparent motion of the objects in the solar system you talk about several periods. First there is the solar period. This is our 24 hour clock. It takes 24 hours for the mean Sun to go between local noon and local noon. Since the Earth’s motion about the Sun is not a perfect circle, but an ellipse, the Sun does not appear at local noon at the same time every day when compared to mechanical clocks. If you look at a globe you see the funny figure 8 shape. That is called an analemma. It tells the difference in time between a mechanical clock and a sundial, up to 15 minutes fast or slow. In the vernacular it is referred to as sun fast and sun slow. The analemma actually changes with position on the Earth.

The second period is the sidereal period. If you watch the stars and look at when a star is highest in the sky every night (called a transit) and compare the time you find the time is 23 hours and 56 minutes. This is called the sidereal rate. Simply, the stars shift their position in the sky by an amount corresponding to the motion of the Earth about the Sun in a day. The Earth moves about the Sun roughly 1 degrees in a day or 1/360th. If you figure what 1/360th of 24 hours it comes out to 4 minutes so the stars shift their position in the sky by 4 minutes in Right Ascension. The exact value is closer to 3 minutes and 56.5 seconds because there are 365.25 days a year and not 360. The sidereal period also refers to the time it takes any object (like a planet or Moon) to appear next to the same stars in the sky. The sidereal period of the Moon is 27.32 days. The sidereal period of the Moon is also called its orbital period.

Then there is the synodic period. This is the time between full Moons, for example. For planets it is opposition or conjunction. Opposition and conjunctions occur when the Earth, sun, and planet form a straight line when projected onto the ecliptic plane. The tilt with respect to the ecliptic is ignored when defining oppositions and conjunctions. For example, Pluto can be 17 degrees away from the ecliptic and still be at opposition. Oppositions occur when the alignment is Sun-Earth-object (object being as Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, etc.). When the alignment is object-Sun-Earth it is known as conjunction. Mercury and Venus cannot be at opposition, being always closer to the Sun than Earth, but the can have what is known as superior and inferior conjunctions. Superior conjunctions are Sun-object-Earth. Inferior conjunctions are object-Sun-Earth.

The synodic period of the Moon is 29.53 days. The sidereal period of Jupiter is 11.9 years. However, from the Earth, the synodic period of Jupiter is 398 days. That is the time between oppositions. Jupiter was in opposition on Oct 29, 2011. The next opposition is Dec 3, 2012. One other thing about opposition, it also defines the time when the object is closest to the Earth and will also appear brightest in the sky. During opposition Jupiter is about 4 AU from the Earth. At conjunction it can be 6 AU away when on the other side of the Sun, conjunction. 1 AU is the astronomical unit, the Earth-Sun distance and equals about 93,000,000 miles.

Retrograde motion is the apparent backwards motion of an object in the sky. It is an optical illusion caused by the relative motion of the two objects. The Earth is going faster than say Jupiter. As the Earth passes Jupiter, for a few days, the orbit appears to travel backwards. Here are some nice picture showing the apparent motion

During the night the planets and the Moon rise in the east and set in the west because of the Earth’s rotation but during the month you see the Moon travel from west to east night to night due to its orbit about the Earth. The planets drift with respect to the stars west to east, except during retrograde motion because of their orbital motion about the Sun but annual motion of the Earth about the Sun causes the planets to rise earlier each day and seem to travel east to west night to night. Since the orbits are inclined to the ecliptic during one opposition Jupiter will appear above the ecliptic. During the next opposition it might be below the ecliptic.

Venus and Mercury have even more complex motions. Mercury is never seen more than ~25 degrees from the Sun and Venus never more than ~45 degrees. The times when the planets are farthest from the Sun are called greatest elongations and can occur in the morning (as a morning star) or evening (as an evening star). Venus has a synodic period of 583 days and Mercury 116 days. Surprisingly, Venus is not brightest when it is closest to the Earth. At superior conjunction Venus and Mercury are farthest away. At inferior conjunction we see the dark side so they are faint. At greatest elongation, Venus and Mercury are farther away than the gibbous phase. Venus and Mercury are brightest during a gibbous phase. This is when the apparent illuminated area of Venus is greatest from Earth.

The relative position of all solar system objects change night to night, month to month, and year to year. The only reliable what to figure out where things are is to use a planetarium program.
