Breaking! Massive fire in Reno - 20+ homes burn | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 4342402 United States 11/18/2011 02:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What is the cause of the fires? Is this area known for fire outbreaks? I know forest fires regularly happen, but does Reno have forests? (Not familiar with the area.) Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1266386 So far, the cause of the fire has not been determined. Wind could have knocked down trees onto power lines, or power lines could have come down on their own, or who knows what. Reports did say that fire started at the top of a peak located to the W/SW of Reno. Fires have happened near Reno before, but nothing like this! Wind is still blowing 35 to 40 constantly and gusting to 65mph! Supposed to die down, but up here at South Lake Tahoe, the wind is blowing very hard, with gusts over 50mph easy! Fuels for the fire include small pine trees, various types of grasses, brush, and deciduous trees. Over 20 homes burned to the ground, and more burning. 10,000 people evacuated so far. Fire is far from over according to reports just now from channel 4 in Reno, with no containment forecast. The commander of emergency services of the Sheriff's dept. saying right now on TV that homes that burned or were damaged in some way by the fire are going to be gone through to make sure fires are out and no one was left in the homes. |

Quoting: my2centsworth We are thinking of you and hope for a quick end to this. Thanks, our friends that had to evacuate are on pins and needles right now - glued to the TV. I guess everyone will be on pins and needles, watching the TV for any news they can pick up. It's hard to have everything you've worked for in the line of fire and nothing you can do but watch. For all it's worth...Our thoughts and prayers are with you. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1292732 United States 11/18/2011 03:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am about 15 minutes away from this fire, and obviously, following this story closely. The news just said "zero containment" at this point, 10k evacuated so far. They are expecting to be fighting this fire throughout the day and night. What is on fire is a very suburban area, and not an area that is prone to this kind of fire risk. In my area, we are having gusts to 70 miles an hour, the house is shaking, cats going nuts. The high wind warnings go for at least another 4 hours, maybe longer, We have wildfires every year here, but nothing like this. It looks like hell. |

Should I be concerned about my elderly parents in Genoa? Genoa is south of Carson City, and hour south of Reno--I wouldn't worry. For Reno however, its another story, They said anything south of McCarran and West of 395 could be at risk, which is all of South West Suburban Reno. The fire is close to me, as the crow flies, but I have some physical barriers-- like HWY 395 in between me & the fire, which should help those of us east of the fire. Am keeping a watchful eye though-- and the air quality is going to suck no matter what. |

Several are burnt to the ground. There will likely be a few more damaged. They have been able to stop the fire from spreading - that is all they said about containment. People that were told to evac can't return till tomorrow. |
