The Blessed (OP) User ID: 1364226 United States 11/19/2011 02:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | MANILA, Philippines — The United States will provide a second warship to the ill-equipped Philippine military as it confronts China in increasingly tense territorial disputes in the South China Sea, a Philippine official said Thursday. Quoting: The Blessed U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton assured Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin during talks in Manila on Wednesday that Washington would give its longtime ally a second Coast Guard cutter virtually for free some time next year. [link to www.washingtonpost.com] why next year. are they suspecting or arranging something for that region next year? |

What is the strategic or economic interest to us for getting involved? Is the oil really worth it? Quoting: Anonymous Cowherder No. This action will do more harm than good. Of course. But remember, we fought tooth and nail for "sparsely populated" islands in World War Two. Don't believe for a second we've (mentally) developed past this. The Devil would never go down to Georgia. Eeew. |

But the Philippines and the Filipino people are. They used to be a US possession until WW2. We should have allowed them statehood. I have known many Filipinos, they are fine people. Strategic interest? You've got to be kidding me. I'm not aware of any large oil deposits in that area, I could be wrong on that. |

There katipunan were fighting for independence from Spain prior to the Spanish-American war, and continued after the US took over governance of the nation. Bonifacio, aguinaldo and rizal wanted no imperial powers controlling the Filipinos. Why can't we honor that memory and stay out of other sovereign nations politics?
