Gas station refused to accept a roll of Golden Dollar coins for gasoline payment

People are just stupid, someone called the cops on me for a two dollar bill once, the cop had a good laugh....

Legaly they have to accept it. Guy back in the 80's paid for his corvet in pennys, if I remember right it was 4 dump trucks full, not even rolled.

I've heard of that happening to people with the $2 bills. Did they just tell you to wait until the police got there, or did they just show up covertly? I can't imagine what I would be saying if they called the police on me for that.

I bet my teen sure is happy I wasn't there with her.

Another government program wasting tax payers money because a couple of dim-witted washington politicians thought it was a good idea to try and mint coins nobody wanted. Who knew?

The program is still going an they are minting these coins even though they are just going into storage. What a huge waste of government spending.

I had a bunch saved. I decided I would rather spend them than have them take up space.

It was a mall, the girl who called was 17 tops. only took two min for them to show, she was acting like she was trying to find out if it was real or not.

Saving them is worthless - they do not contain any precious metal (except some copper - which gives them a gold tint). Also I don't think they are even that attractive of a coin. You'd be better off saving pre 1982 copper pennies, than these stupid coins.

Sounds very ignorant of the gss station owners and employee. Typical idiotic americans. Cant think outside of the box for anything.

Gas stations are full of cigarette smoking, lottery playing low lifes anyways. I will only go to one in my area and its a mini mart/car wash/detail shop.

I think your daughter is full of it and she was just too embaressed to use the coins as most teens would be. Even though they are dollars it's just like asking the kid to pay in pennies, nickels, or dimes.

in the uk we have somethign called 'legal tender'

it guarantees anyone can pay for something with this.

the guarantee is this, if payment is offered, its considered paid.

meaning if you have offered payment of legal tender and its refused then you have just paid regardless who still has the money.

I USE TO THINK LEGAL TENDER WAS LEGAL TENDER; but is seems a business is given broad power to accept or reject a payment. Like no bills larger than a $20 and etc.

Yeah, no kidding. The government wants you to use an electronic method so all purchases can be tracked. I believe it also entices you to use credit cards, which usually ends up making money for the bankers.

They don't have a choice, dollar coins are legal tender. The only coins that are not legal tender is unrolled pennies. Where I live there was a guy that had a dispute with a car dealer. They said if he didn't pay the bill, they would charge him storage. He paid the $500 bill with coins. After a big blow out, a judge told him he would have to either roll the $10 in pennies or the dealership did not have to accept them and if the bill was not paid in full they could charge storage. So he rolled the pennies and the dealership got millions of dollars worth of bad publicity. The dealer principle did not look real happy on the news that night. I would think that if they refuse legal tender as payment, the bill could be void, but that would be a subject for a judge. I don't think any judge would come out against legal tender, because that could be the end of our fiat currency.

Our gas station requires payment in advance so she was prepaying, therefore a transaction had not yet taken place.

Maybe go cash them in amd get rolls of pennies and pay with that :P

I spent a $2 bill once, at a convenience store. The store clerk examined it, flipped it over and examined the other side, scribbled on it with one of those currency markers, and then looked at me and said: Oh, they're REAL! I've heard people talk about them but I've never seen one.

But he accepted it. He probably kept it and replaced it with two singles.

They cannot....BY LAW...refuse LEGAL TENDER.

At worst she would have to unroll them....but they must take them.
