To my understanding they started as part of the new deal brought about by FDR. During this time the country was hit with the depression and FDR started to realize that it was necessary to start programs to help aide the underclass, hence he implemented these programs for that purpose. Food companies benefiting from it could be a part of it, but that's probably after the fact. And if you think that these programs are soon to be defunct you should read up on a concept called bread and circus. As long a people have access to the bare necessities (food, water, shelter) and a source of entertainment, it serves as a means to keep the public appeased just enough so as to allow those in power to have free-reign over their lives. Hence a reason why TV and entertainment is ever so emphasized and prevalent.

Apparently they've changed the rules on EBT in some states? I thought only non-taxable items could be on them, in the case of food purchases. Take-out food from fast food franchises doesn't qualify. You can buy a burrito in the snack aisle and put it on EBT - but if you stick it in the store's microwave to heat it up, it becomes a 'taxable' and EBT doesn't cover it.

Don't forget: almost half the food assistance in the U.S. is being consumed by illegal aliens. If we could fix that problem first, states all over the country wouldn't have to cut back the funds allotted to America's own poor.

Im in nys and i recieve unemployment and it comes through chase bank...they sometimes hold my money for as much as 72 hours.they probably dont make much off me alone but when you multiply that by the 858,151 people collecting unemployment it must be a substantial profit made on a weekly basis.

Another thing you're lacking in is basic math. If almost 70% of the population is white-European and close to 5% now (because of the economy) are on some kind of public assistance, that's not much compared to the 75% on the dole showing in some other ethnic types. About the same percentage of the 'inner cities' are products of 'single-parent' homes and unwed mothers. I'd think there's a definite correlation here.

Like booze, hair weaves, cigarettes, clothes (at some of the mexican owned markets)and many other products that are not food. I can understand people upset about people who abuse the system but I think a lot of you are just mean and cruel bitter people who assume they know absolutely everything about a person just by looking at them.

The guy who is going to dialysis every day and takes 20 different meds should be eating gruel so people feel better about their hamburger helper that they worked for. I'm sorry but if he wants to by lobster until he's almost out of money and then has to live on spam for the rest of the month, I don't have a problem with it, especially after they bailed out all of the rich folk.

Some other people have good days and have bad days who are disabled. Some may look fine at the grocery store but it takes everything out of them by the time they get home they can't do anything else for a long time.

I know people game the system and shame on them but really the same people complaining about "how" people use their benefits are most likely the same people complaining about the person who missed too much work or doesn't seem to pull their weight at work who had an invisible type of disability. Some people just can't win in life no matter what they try to do.

While illegals and people with no job having their 5th child getting benefits, people are bitchin' about others using their card for Popeye's. Some people need to stop complaining and start being grateful for the work they're able to do and the hamburger helper their work affords them to have.

Some people won't be happy until the unfortunate are forced to be bedridden 24 hours a day and eating gruel with no internet, no phone and no tv (because to buy those are luxuries-perhaps someone actually was charitable and bought them those things to help make their life a little more bearable).

All this does is show me that people can't be trusted enough to take care of the unfortunate on their own. Too many would have them chained up and abused.
