So once i pick him up, we're riding along just talking, and suddenly i looked up and seen this huuuuge crescent moon. sort of orangish in color. So I instantly say "Look at how BIG the moon is!" He looked up and thought the same. We both then immediately tried to shake it off because we had made it to his workplace. So I dropped him off(This was at 9:50pm), and was gonna take a pic of the big moon, but it vanished! It hadnt even been 3 mins since i had dropped him off! I drove for a while trying to find the moon but it was gone. And my friend usually takes a smoke break before he goes in, so he was looking for it too, and he said he couldnt find it either. Quoting: afost01 Is it normal for the moon to orbit this fast? and that close? Cus that was freaky! Also the next night i tried to catch the moon at around the same time(9:50) but it was not nearly as close as it was. Horizon blocked |

Was going to take a photo of it, from a better vantage point, but when I got there by bike, the moon was nowhere to be found. I was at a more elevated point, and there were very little clouds in the sky out of what I could see. Crescent? yes, yellow\reddish? yes. Strange? Maybe.. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 6243301 ![]() 12/02/2011 02:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's a well known optical illusion that the moon looks bigger near the horizon. It's been documented for centuries. The fact that it apparently "disappeared" is because it set, which isn't surprising if it was near the horizon (and if you changed position it's possible your horizon had changed too). |

I even noticed this in october because I had been indoors with a sick relative for the past 5 weeks and got home about October 26th. I watched the moon for several nights and it was irratic in it;s position in the sky. Did you watch the vid? Have you watched the moon set before? The Moon in that vid set WAY to fast and it was completely because of the traffic/street light illusion....in fact, it would appear that the movement of the cars confirms it is not fast forwarded. Orion is not in the correct place or orientation. It has been my favorite constellation my whole life(almost 50) it is tilted, like on his back yet should be in a more standing position...leaning back a little.... yes, I understand summer and winter tilt of the earth, but his belt has always been mostly across the sky, not up and down as it is now. big dipper as well cus you use that to find the north star... Lord, I watch for you, my salvations draws nigh. |

Yes, as it does every night/day... The moon takes about 29 days to orbit the earth, and every night/day it rises in a different place, has a different phase, follows a different path across the sky, and sets in a different place. In fact, it takes 18.5 years for a complete cycle before it'll rise in the same place at the same time again. I put that as night/day, because a lot of the time the moon doesn't rise or set at night, it does it during the day - another fact which may interest you... I watched the moon for several nights and it was irratic in it;s position in the sky. Quoting: cc 1295505 See above - it's not supposed to be in the same place at the same time every night. LOL - a lot more often than you apparently. I've been an amateur astronomer for over 40 years, and I've observed the moon many times, in all different phases, during lunar and solar eclipses, and at all times of day and night. What you're seeing is perfectly normal, just surprising if you aren't used to how the moon moves in the sky. The Moon in that vid set WAY to fast and it was completely because of the traffic/street light illusion....in fact, it would appear that the movement of the cars confirms it is not fast forwarded. Quoting: cc 1295505 I watched it - the moon didn't set, it just moved up and down a bit, most of which was due to movement of the car and camera... Orion is not in the correct place or orientation. Again, you need to spend more time observing. When Orion is rising the belt is almost vertical, and only appears horizontal when it's fairly high in the sky. You're seeing it early in the evening, just after rising at the moment, so it's "tilted over". Wait until about midnight, and look again. Then, if you really want to understand what's going on, get up about 6 am and look to the west - you'll see Orion setting, tilted over the other way :) You need to understand that the "circumpolar constellations" as they're known rotate around the pole star, and will appear to be at all sorts of angles depending on the time of night and time of year... Pray all you want, but it won't change the fact that all these things are completely normal, well understood, and have been observed and documented for centuries by astronomers, navigators and people who just look at the sky... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6408193 Ah well now, that's quite a complex question to answer. You see, it's all to do with the interaction of the tire tread, the road surface, and the vehicle speed. The waveform produced at any instant is a superposition of the frequencies derived from the tread pattern's rate of interaction with the road surface, which is of course a function of the wheel size and velocity, and hence the angular velocity of the wheel, plus the overtones from the finer patterning of the road's surface material, presumably an asphalt / gravel mix in a pseudo-random matrix. Also there are some effects from wind noise, which add higher frequencies as well. HTH Taken to extremes, the effect can even be used to play music - [link to www.youtube.com] ![]() |
