Hah, six months? I'm sure it won't be THAT long. Two of my friends dropped dead in a 4-month span recently. Neither had any medical conditions, neither was old. The human die-off is already under way, just quietly. Looks just like a heart attack, or stroke, or pulmonary edema, no real trace unless autopsy performed within 6-8 hours of being gassed and most corpses aren't even FOUND that fast, much less autopsied.

Anyway, more stories that fit the M.O.:

Honestly, if you really believed this BS you'd spend all your money moving to Denver and getting rebreathers, O2 tanks, etc.

This is just fantasy role-playing on your part.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7767898

Why would I move to Denver? Elevation? Hydrogen sulfide is just a little heavier than air. It's blowing around Denver too. I'm topographically around 500 feet above my surrounding area - that's as likely to be safe as being in Denver. (Which is to say: it's just a matter of time, wherever you are.)

As for O2 tanks - that's your solution? So, each tank holds an hour of air, so I'd need, what, 365*24*30 tanks, per person, to last 30 years? So about 200,000 O2 tanks each. Ummm, I don't think you've thought this through very well.

What I spent money on was tuckpointing my home to help make it more airtight, plastic sheeting, ozone generators to react away any H2S that gets inside, indoor plants to generate oxygen indoors, a gas fireplace to burn any trace H2S off, and some 6" centrifugal fans connected to 25-pound activated carbon filters. I'll die in my own home, just as many of the folks dropping dead each day are doing.

Quote: 'The "hairy" pincers contain filamentous bacteria, which the creature may use to detoxify poisonous minerals from the water emitted by the hydrothermal vents where it lives. Alternatively, it may feed on bacteria, although it is generally thought to be a carnivore.[2]'

Remember all those strange eggs that washed ashore near Alaska? Maybe we're seeding these things, or something like them, wherever we're finding H2S or methane plumes in the oceans. Lots of research vessels out and about these days looking at deepwater vents and the life around them - I think the H2S problem is the reason for that.

Remember the two runners that dropped dead in Philadelphia a month or so ago, as well as the 500+ people that sickened at the Las Vegas Marathon recently. Runners are outside for periods of time, running up hills and down valleys, covering large distances, and thus more likely to hit a plume of H2S blowing through.

Now, back to the interesting stuff.
Out of this ugliness may come,
Some day, so beautiful a flower,
That men will wonder at that hour,
Remembering smoke and flowerless slum,
And ask-glimpsing the agony

to the Denver discusssion above, the air here is not good and decreasing in oxygen even more.. Its already a bit thin from the altitude. I get days when i want an oxygen tank. doing some slow deep breathing, sucking and holding air in helps with this.

Living on a landfill like I do has its issues too, it burbs a lot of rotten egg smell these days. Over a year ago I woke up to intense smell in the house, probably sucked in by the furnace and even though cold, I of course opened the windows and aerated it. seemed to be coming from the north end of my lot space that time because thats where I smelled it the most outside.

I'd put that in the 'possible' category. But we'll never have someone come out and tell us, and if it is H2S there will be some cover story. That's why I got away from individual stories entirely a couple of years ago and started focusing on the PATTERNS of events. Once you do that, and apply some logic and common sense and science to determine what you'd expect to see...well, you DO see what you'd expect to see, happening all around us, and escalating.

Lots of those this past year. That was one of the things I noticed early on. I'm thinking that's the same problem as with car crashes (and balloon flights): if the human operator is incapacitated (or dead), you get problems.

Looked at the map of that area: right near the lake, probably low elevation. Driver dies, doesn't make his turn (or doesn't stop, or DOES stop), trains collide.

Also, maybe a contributing factor in some derailments: the biogenic sulfide corrosion thing, eating away at the tracks and bolts and concrete over time.

Low-tech solution to buy us time. I guess if we build millions of unmanned drones and hook 'em up with some seriously sophisticated AI-type algorithms, then we could sorta-somewhat automate this process in time, to burn our at least the most dangerous and concentrated plumes.

Re: Massive Methane LEAK in Arctic sea - the End is Nigh
Gonna wax a little philosophical here on a Friday night at what feels like the end of time.

You remember China disallowing ANY TV show or movie involving time travel? Around then, someone found a 100-year-old timepiece in a tomb that had been sealed for 500 years. A paper on osti.gov (search for "Alcubierre", a paper funded by the DOE on FTL travel) mentions that any FTL travel would automatically include the capability of building a time machine.

Well, maybe someone's done that (or is going to), and events are happening in the NOW that have been manipulated by those in the NOT-YET. There was a rash of children in some city in China, all with the same surname, all in a certain age range, who died mysteriously and in a short period of time. Ever see the movie 'Inception', about these guys who would go into dreams and insert - or 'incept' - an IDEA? Well, going back in time and killing a person who would LATER have a world-changing idea - or make a world-changing decision - would be kinda like the opposite: Unception? DEception? Hah.

Anyway, if those in the future have replayed timelines, trying to better theirs (because the human race goes extinct perhaps), then they will surely have realized that any civilization of 7 billion people, mostly pretty well-educated, which is capable of survive this extinction event will INVARIABLY have SOMEONE who brings forward this truth, that the oceans themselves and the ancient bacteria that reside therein will/have become this merciless enemy, this invisible gaseous spectre of death which reaches down from the sky and snuffs out the lights of our consciousness one by one, then five by five, then a thousand by a thousand until we are no more.

So WHATEVER the solution is, it must not involve lying to the people; this truth will out, inevitably, every time. Play it over and over and it'll be there. If the populace is too dumb to figure it out then the populace is also too dumb to survive the event itself. So survival ultimately mandates truth.

Okay, so if that's the case, then what REALLY matters is WHO brings the truth forward, and how. Maybe we're lucky in this timeline. I'm non-denominational. I'm non-judgmental (I understand the government's decisions and how they surely evolved, and I sure as shit understand how the common man feels, since I am one). I'm not looking to make a buck, nor do I have any real ulterior motive, except perhaps the selfishness of having a few people to talk to about this. I like people - I've found good in people everywhere I have ever gone, black and white, Muslim and Christian and Rastafarian, whatever - and if I have any real desire, first and foremost it is that my species survive. No anger, no recriminations. Bummed...well, of course.

But see, if we survive as a species, and we can keep our history and culture, our knowledge, our legends and the history of our deeds, all of that, then WE ALL MATTERED. We've all played a part in building this civilization, even if simply by blindly consuming things and watching TV (and I have done my fair share of that). So ultimately, if anyone survives, then all of us made that happen, each in our own way.

I have not given up all hope though. But that's also why I don't go blabbing - or even trying to blab - to news outlets or whatever. However bad things are, when the masses realize what's happening, then civilization halts, or undergoes a probably-ugly transformation. And then whatever mitigation efforts we CAN do now, we might not be able to do then, and then we'd all die off all the faster.

It is a shitty situation. I say to myself sometimes, 'We didn't deserve this!' But I hear then the voice of Clint Eastwood in 'Unforgiven' as he points his rifle at Gene Hackman, 'Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.' Which is really just another way of saying, 'Life's not fair.' (Superb movie, BTW. If you haven't seen it, well, life is short.)

The one thing I DO control though, regardless of the chaos raging around me throughout the world, is WHO I AM. And I define who I am with every decision I make, action I take, or word I speak or write. And I define myself within the context of this thread as a man who speaks the truth, a non-violent man who wishes well for his fellow human, a man who doesn't give up hope even in the face of hopelessness. If that's who I am when I die, then that's as *I* chose.

And that's my Friday philosophizing, for what it's worth.

Plains shatter warm weather records, set historic high temperatures
[link to www.washingtonpost.com]

More than 300 record high temperatures were set in 21 U.S. states Thursday. But the heart of the unusual warmth concentrated in Plains, where some areas experienced temperatures 40 degrees above average.
Several locations set all-time January record high temperatures, including Huron (65 degrees) amd Mitchell (68 degrees) in South Dakota (SD) and Minot (61 degrees), Fargo (55 degrees) and Jamestown (56 degrees) in North Dakota. (Source: CapitalClimate).
What distinguishes this warm spell is the amount by which some records were broken. Consider Rapid City, SD hit 73, obliterating the old record by 13 degrees. (That 73 degree high temperature was 4 above the high temperature of 69 in Miami, Fl). Aberdeen, SD reached 63, smashing the old record of 46 by 17 degrees and setting a new monthly record.
AccuWeather highlighted the following incredible record: “...in Philip, S.D., the mercury reached a balmy 74 degrees, which absolutely obliterated the old record of 46 set back in 2002.”
In Minnesota, several locations reached the 60s for the first time ever during the first week of January. Alexandria reached 55, crushing its old record of 38 (from 1984) by an amazing 17 degrees (source: Star Tribune weather blog)

Re: Massive Methane LEAK in Arctic sea - the End is Nigh
Hypothesis: As has happened in the past, the already-anoxic oceans have grown considerably more anoxic because of the halting of the Gulf current that distributed heat around Florida, up the east coast and then to the east. As a result, as has happened in the past, the anoxic 'dead zones' are pluming hydrogen sulfide (which is highly lethal to oxygen-using life) into the atmosphere. Consequently, the ozone layer is being reacted away (H2S + O3 -> H2O + O2 + S), exposing the Earth to rising and probably ultimately lethal levels of UV radiation, causing a rise in mutations all around the world.

This is also allowing in more heat, which is now accumulating in the Gulf and along the east coast (at minimum), and beginning to dissociate the methane hydrate deposits, especially those near Washinton DC. Because the H2S eats away the hydroxl radicals as well as ozone, and because the hydroxyl radicals are what would NORMALLY mitigate methane in the atmosphere, the resulting methane plumes will last considerably longer, enhancing the oceanic heating, causing more H2S plumes, making the methane last longer...and so on.

The rising H2S levels in the air are killing off the biosphere. This began some time ago, with bees and small lizards, and has worked its way up the size ladder as the atmospheric plumes have increased in concentration, and this process has escalated radically since the Gulf circulation stopped in 2010. Now the H2S is wafting down into low-lying areas and killing people there in increasing numbers, and it is making its way into homes now too and killing multi-person households, as well as fish, birds, trees and other oxygen-using life around the world.

Because H2S is a flammable gas, its interaction with our flammable fuels infrastructure (cars, planes, jet skis, boats, homes, hotels, businesses, chemical plants, ammo depots, etc) is problematic and is leading to increases in fires and explosions, everywhere generally, but more on and near the coasts. Also, it is extremely fast-acting and people driving are likely to be affected, either stricken unconscious or dead, and this will cause an increase in major traffic accidents which has already begun.
