Anonymous Coward User ID: 3305901 United States 01/31/2012 07:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That is bad, bad news. Methane is what ancient anaerobic bacteria in the 'dead zones' of the oceans eat, which spew hydrogen sulfide. That will provide them a nigh limitless supply of food, and when bacteria have limitless food... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6830403 Well, I was hoping for a while that we could mine the methane hydrates, use them as an energy source. Burning it converts it into CO2, not good, but better than methane and waaaaay better than hydrogen sulfide. But it's too late for that, obviously; no time to ramp up infrastrucure for that now. So, what are the choices? We could arm subs with powerful lasers and purposely detonate the methane hydrate deposits as they begin to dissociate (melt). That would produce some HUGE explosions. I kinda wonder if that wasn't what caused that Virginia quake. Not sure we have enough subs though. We could use nukes too, and that'd probably burn off the methane more effectively, but has the obvious drawback of needing to nuke most of the coastlines in the northern hemisphere (which is where most methane hydrate deposits are located). Or we could just let the Earth do her thing, as she has before, and then we end up with a deadly poisonous and explosively flammable atmosphere for the next few million years. Tough call there. Gee would that, like, produce a lot of Blood Red Tide, by any chance? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 9861425 United States 02/01/2012 05:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Today I am gonna put aside the dying and the doom and instead bring to you a little hope. I found this image a few days ago: [link to en.wikipedia.org] At first I thought that was one of the faces of our enemy, the bacteria and archaea that spew out hydrogen sulfide. But as it turns out, that image is of the species Beggiatoa. More info on that species here: [link to en.wikipedia.org] Quote: "Some species have the ability of chemolitho-autotrophic growth by means of sulfide oxidation for energy and with carbon dioxide as a source of carbon for biosynthesis. In this metabolism internal stored nitrate is the electron acceptor and reduced to ammonia." Sulfide oxidation: 2H2S + O2 => 2S + 2H2O So some members of this species essentially EAT hydrogen sulfide, oxidize it for energy, turning two molecules of H2S and one molecule of oxygen into 2 molecules of elemental sulfur and two molecules of water. That image was taken in 2008, off the coast of South Carolina, by a deep sea vehicle. I see why they are looking so closely at these seeps and vents and the like: any real solution has to involve some form of life, probably a bacteria like this that evolved long before our own oxygen-using kind of life ever appeared. Here's some info on those oceanic cold seeps: [link to en.wikipedia.org] Quote: "The first type of organism to take advantage of this deep-sea energy source is bacteria.[2] Aggregating into bacterial mats at cold seeps, these bacteria metabolize methane and hydrogen sulfide (another gas that emerges from seeps) for energy.[2] This process of obtaining energy from chemicals is known as chemosynthesis.[2]" It took as long as 30 million years for the Earth to recover from the Permian-Triassic extinction event. Maybe if we HELP these H2S-eating and methane-eating bacteria get going and do their thing then perhaps we can cut that amount of time down considerably. |

Drop North Of Papau New Guinea - Pacific Ocean Near Philippine Sea And then a day or two later we got the sunk ferry carrying 350-ish people in that same area: Thread: A ferry carrying around 300 passengers is missing off the north coast of Papua I think what I saw in my saucepot as my sauce heated up was a microcosm of what is actually happening on our planet, in our seas, lakes and oceans as THEY heat up. When you take into account the methane we KNOW is melting in the Arctic, it's probable that this is occurring elsewhere. So under the ocean floor, methane hydrates melt away, releasing the gas. If the gas has a path to the water and then to the surface then off it goes. But if not then the gas will build up and build up until it eventually EXPLODES free, pushing up the ocean floor for a moment as the gas bubble escapes, after which the ocean floor would collapse down deeper than it was before (due to the lost volume). And then a ship comes by, hits the cloud, and has problems. Another possibility (and not at all mutualy exclusive) is that we are not being told about most of the volcanic eruptions that are occurring. Think about it. There are 3 million volcanoes on Earth, but land only covers 30% of the surface area. In other words, most volcanoes are underwater, yet we hear about VERY FEW of those - generally only when they breach surface with eruptions or when they create a new island. So if there are 50 volcanoes erupting that we know about then there may very well be another HUNDRED that are erupting underwater. That big cruise ship that crashed off Italy - something hit it from below. I'm guessing a volcanic eruption occurred beneath it, or else the ocean bubbled up some gas as it was going by. |
