Just last week, Havel pissed off the Vatican by criticizing a local Catholic priest who will become a Cardinal.

Coincidence ???




It seems God is taking away the opponents of the Catholic Church by divine decree.

A war of words has broken out between leading Czech figures in the Catholic Church and their supporters, including Klaus’ controversial aide Petr Hájek. The conflict became public in late November when Monsignor Tomáš Halík, a dissident under the communist regime who became a professor of theology and advisor to then president Václav Havel, told the daily Mladá fronta dnes that Archbishop of Prague Dominik Duka is “too close” to Klaus (who has no love lost for Havel).

He was president of Czechoslavakia/Czech Republic since 1993. He sounds like he was a very intelligent, accomplished and interesting person.

One of the leaders who brought down the Iron Curtain of communism. What the fuck have you done with your life?

Vaclav Havel was one very special person.

He was a writer who opposed the Communist government in the former Czechoslovakia. When given the choice of leaving the country or going to prison - he chose prison saying "Fourteen million people can't just go and leave Czechoslovakia".

He was instrumental in the end of communist oppression, the Velvet Revolution and was elected the first president of the newly democratic country.

Those of you who don't know of him - should. He was one very special person.

Yes, it's a coincidence. Vaclav Havel had been very ill for a number of years - especially within this last year. It's not surprising at all that he died. he suffered from severe lung and heart problems and he died a natural death.

Though it's not surprising, it's very sad. Although I am not Czech, I greatly admired him and I will miss his presence in the world.

Actually, VH died in his sleep. His body was completely worn out after a long illness and he was (once again) coming down with something his body could not fight off. (Some virus or something of that nature).

A poet, a dissident, a hero, and an effective politician. Don't hold the latter against him. Compared to the leadership we have now, he was a saint, albeit a chain-smoking one.

funny how there is big headlines of how Whithey houstonis dead & nothing about Havel, one was useless junkie who sang shitty songs and other was a decent man who fought for the freedom of his people & nation...

Huh? I don't hold anything against him. I was just saying that he died from natural causes.

Well, I think in the case of Whitney Houston, the issue is whether she was murdered. Also, she was a bigger celebrity in the United States than Vaclav Havel was, although he was more widely known in Europe.

I agree though, the coverage of VH's death should have been much greater. He was an amazing individual. I wouldn't, say he was exactly a saint (smile), nor do I think he would want people to give him such a title, but he was a great man.
