Video: Blizzard and Severe Weather target parts of the Plains Monday into Tuesday

Graphic - [link to www.theweatherspace.com]

(TheWeatherSpace.com) - A storm system that affected the Southwestern United States since Thursday is finally ejecting eastward. This will bring gusty winds and pounding snow from the Texas Panhandle, Southeastern Colorado, and into the Central Plains of Kansas on Monday.

A surface low will develop in Southeastern New Mexico on Monday morning and race northeastward through Oklahoma. The closed surface feature will be strong, bringing in colder air into the system and over-running it with moisture for heavy snowfall.

Snowfall will begin to affect the Northeastern New Mexico, Southeastern Colorado, and Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles on Monday morning. The snow will be heavy and gusty winds will accompany the system to expect a blizzard.

The main band should go across Western-Central Kansas, heading northeast through Northeastern Kansas. Kansas City is south of this so right now not looking at significant snow for you there.

The heaviest snow will fall at the tri-region of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado with the deepened surface low through Monday and Monday night, adding up to over a foot of snow.

Other areas for the foot of snow mark will be in Western to Central Kansas.

Further south, severe thunderstorms are likely in Eastern Texas area with the best low level shear between Dallas and Houston. This combined with a healthy low level jet and enough instability may bring a chance of tornadoes in those regions. The main threat will be damaging winds.

KM, dude, Chicago has not had a day of winter yet.

When do you expect the Jet Stream to drive temperatures colder in this area?

I think that would require a westward migration of the present Jet Stream.

Similarly, Britain and the Isles have had some fierce wind and storms lately, is the Gulf Stream askew or what is going on here?

The jet stream has to move from where it is now for Chicago but after Dec 23rd looks about right for that change to bring snowfall there.

Hi Kev! Another informative and well-presented post. Thanks for dropping by!

I NEVER thought I would ask this, but do you see any RAIN for Oregon? This month (December) Arizona and Palm Springs have had more rain than Oregon (!), and December/January are usually our wettest months. In some respects I guess that's good, since we don't have radiation coming down with the rain, but we depend upon our snowmelt for Summer and Fall water. We had a pretty good snowfall up in the mountains during October, but it's been sketchy ever since, and all of the ski places are REALLY starting to worry.

Thanks in advance. hf bump bump and 5 *'s.

The pattern is set to change in less than 4 days so your storms will return and January looks really good for you.
