Does anyone know this breed of dog?
Can anyone give me any information about the Lagotto Magnolo, Italian dog. Do they make good companion pets?

Thankyou all for responding, yes Lagotto Romagnolo, my error of spelling. What I really want is someones first-hand experience with this breed. Anyone? I´ve read the web sites.

<<Research for a smaller dog breed ultimately led me to the Lagotto Romagnolo, and eventually Queensland, Australia, where with the help of Rena Henderson, we facilitated the adoption and importation of Azzuronastro Aust CH Francesca.

Frankie, our Lagotto, is easy to love..That´s the best way to say it...She is sweet and loves to be around people. Francesca came to us at 14 months and she received her Championship just before she arrived-- an amazing feat for her age, which only gives testament to how smart she is and how well she responded to Rena (and company´s) excellent handling. She loves to go for walks and swims in the water with enthusiasm.

Favorite games...retreiving toys thrown on land or water and her new game is to not only retrieve, but to find the toy I have carefully hidden with her powerful truffle hunting nose. OK, so she has never seen a real truffle, but she loves the game just the same and is getting so smart that she finds all my best hiding places. It is getting increasingly more difficult to hide the toy from her. I have sometimes hidden other toys as well, so she knows she must get the "correct" toy. Frankie LOVES snow!!! In the winter she loves to stick her nose- if not her whole head, under the snow and push it around-- like she is swimming in it...It looks so funny!!! One thing is for certain, a Lagotto´s antics will often make you laugh.

The Lagotto coat is best described as lush, thick and curly. It´s softness was one of the most surprising things for me about Lagotto. Not only will this coat not scratch your delicate face, it is also hyper allergenic. Also, Lagotto will not ruin your expensive clothing with dog hair that refuses to come off. Though non shedding, if they are not brushed, they will leave around the house-- what my grandmother used to call "minou´s" (dust balls). A small price. >>

Re: Does anyone know this breed of dog?
ac10.....Thankyou very much for the info. I have accepted/been accepted to get a Lagotto on breeders terms from NSW, so after your description of them in the home, I´m even more excited than before. She will be living in Melbourne with me. How does Frankie get along with other dogs?

Re: Does anyone know this breed of dog?
Hi JustaBabe. I´m fine. I´m kind of intriqued by the truffle hunting skills of this dog. Here in Montana truffles grow after a forest fire which we have had in the last few years. I had thought you needed a pig ppig to find truffles but a cute dog would be much preferred.

Utilisation– Truffle Dog.

TEMPERAMENT– A natural gift for searching and its very good nose has made the breed very efficient in truffle searching. The former hunting instinct has been eliminated, hence his work is not distracted by the scent of game. The Lagotto is tractable, undemanding, keen, affectionate, very attached to his owner and easy to train. He is a very good companion and also an excellent watch dog.

Truffles--Fascinating Fungi From Below The Ground
Of all the edible fungi, truffles (Tuber spp.) are perhaps the most fascinating. Truffles are the fruiting bodies (ascocarps) of mycorrhizal ascomycetous fungi. Unlike other common forest mushrooms, truffles are subterranean and resemble small pebbles or clods of dirt beneath the soil. Depending on the species, they may be 1-2 cm across (e.g. Tuber gibbosum of the Pacific Northwest). They are typically harvested with a garden rake if you know of a reliable site; however, ingenious humans have discovered that certain mammals, including pigs and dogs, can sniff out these delicious fungi. Although pigs and dogs are the most accomplished (and popular) truffle hunters, these subterranean delicacies are also sniffed out by goats in Sardinia and bear cubs in Russia. Pigs and dogs can detect truffles from as far away as 50 yards, and there is even a case of a dog jumping over a hedge and running across a field to find a choice truffle under a beech tree 100 yards away. Since the fabled truffles of France and Italy retail for more than $500 a pound, a good swine or canine truffle sniffer is a valuable asset.

Some truffles emit the odor of certain mammalian steroids, including androstenol (androst-16-en-3-ol), a chemical that occurs in the black truffle Tuber melanosporum and in the testicles of swine. In fact, it is found in the saliva and breathe of rutting boars, where it serves as a pheromone to overcome the sexual inhibitions of young female pigs. This probably explains the natural lust and talent sows have for truffle hunting. The same substance is found in the underarm perspiration of men and in urine of women, and truffles have been used for an aphrodisiac. The sexual role of truffles in humans has not been clearly established, however, men rating photographs of normally dressed women for sexual attractiveness generally give higher marks while sniffing androstenol. This chemical is already being added to certain cosmetics designed to attract potential mating partners. Unlike other above-ground mushrooms, truffle spores do not depend on wind dispersal. Instead they are spread by various truffle-eating animals, including rodents, deer, pigs, insects and slugs. The spores pass through the digestive tract of these animals unscathed.
