SHTF decision - $470 dollars to spend. AK-47 or Shotgun?
I recently got $400 dollars for Christmas, with another 70 I can set aside for gun purchase. So I need help on the next addition to my family.

I own several handguns and some .22 rifles. I know a shotgun and semi-auto main rifle are a requirement for any good SHTF prep.

I can get an AK for $470, or H&R/Mossberg 88 for under $200. With the shotgun I would have plenty of money left over for ammo, but the AK would take up all I have to spend. The left over money from buying a shotgun would be great, but I have a chance to get an AK right now.

Tough call. Shotgun or AK-47 for SHTF?

shotgun ammo is close to a $1 a shell... ak ammo is cheaper (believe it or not). $160 would get you about 250 rounds through cabellas... not much for SHTF

shotgun for upclose and person home/bunker defence or the ak for semi-long range suppression fire. not sniper quality but more useful than a shotgun for long range.

each situationally useful, and yeah AK ammo is cheap and plentiful

Shotgun is much better option for building and home protection but of course AK more useful outside, if you train yourself good, you can take down targets at 200m away without a scope.

Commando style ;)

Hands down AK. Cheaper ammo and weight. 500 rounds of 7.62 is a lot lighter than 500 rounds of 12 gauge.doomsol

Learn to smile and spend the $$ on something else.If you cant decide what gun to get maybe you wont know how to use it either. You would be the first to get shot.
ps I had a SKS (for runner of AK47)back home and had no trouble shooting goats and Red deer.

Whatever ammo you get, you will still have to clear it occassionally if you want it to run smooth, but of course quality is better in war, but that dude will not go to war.

More than likely.

The surplus ammo I have to buy for my Mosin Nagant M91/30 has corrosive primers... so I have to clean the shit out of it after using it.

The "commie" ammo isn't "crappy" at all... trust me. I was actually just shooting yesterday and a single shot reduced a cinder-block to rubble. Just because it's Russian made, don't think it's "bad." The Russian ammo is full military load... at least the 7.62x54R I use in the Mosin is.

If you own several hand guns take one, or two, and barter for an AK. Use your 470 bucks, and buy ammo for it. I'm not sure what kind of .22 rifles you have, a 10-22 should bring you a couple bills. Maybe you could get enough for a Remington 870 magnum express. Think of it as trading up.

Very simple Broheim. If you want to defend your home, get a shotgun. If you want to defend your country, get a rifle.

Any questions?

Go with the Chinese SKS. The last time I went to a gun show (it's been a few years) they were selling new in box for as low as $69 , and the "paratrooper" model (shorter barrel) was going for $99 new. The Russian models (better quality) were going for around $150.

Prices may be a bit higher now, but still not as much as AKs. The SKS shoots the same round as the AK-47, and is more accurate (one minute of angle groups at 100 meters is typical).

I would buy an AR upper or a mini 14. The russian guns are good for training and practice, but I want something better for SHTF and more ammo commonality. You are probably not going to find as mich x39 as 5.56 , 308 and 30 06 22lr and 12 guage ammo when scavenging.

They are... the supply got bought up because of the low prices.

I expect Mosin Nagant 91/30's to go up in price soon too.... they are about $99 right now... but people are buying them left and right because they are cheap, reliable, accurate, and the ammo is cheap.
