The FBI says the suspect is 30-year-old Trey Scott Atwater.

Atwater was stopped at Midland International Airport about 9 a.m. Saturday.

“The underwear-bomber in Detroit was totally dropped on Israel's door. The man [Trey Scott Atwater] being held in FBI custody after security at Midland International Airport found explosives in his carry-on bag is active military.

According to midland Police Department Sgt. Broan Rackow, at the time of his apprehension Atwater had been in Midland visiting family and was traveling back to North Carolina.

The explosives found in Atwater's possession at the airport were in military-grade wrapping.

The incident remains under investigation.

Trey Scott Atwater is being held by the Midland Sheriff's Department pending his release to the US Marshals Service.

According to a report dated March 17, 2010 published in the Odessa American (OA) Online newspaper:

A U.S. Army Staff Sgt. named Trey Atwater who is originally from Midland, TX returned from duty on March 17, 2010.

Trey Atwater is married with two children and has already served 2 tours in Afghanistan.

Atwater is the son of Bonnie [Jean] Awater of Midland and is a 1999 graduate of Midland Lee High School. His wife is named Tamra and two sons are Trent and Ty.

Atwater is a Green Beret and is scheduled for a third tour of duty in Afghanistan in July.

The man arrested in the Midland [Texas] International Airport for attempting to take explosives aboard an American Eagle flight has been identified as Trey Scott Atwater of Hope Mills, North Carolina.

Little has been disclosed about the man who is accused of trying to take a package of Composition 4 explosive on board American Eagle flight 3283 yesterday morning.

Some media outlets are saying that it was a “bomb” while others have not confirmed this. Initial reports stated the man said he was active duty military and this too has not been confirmed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Hope Mills, North Carolina is 15.5 miles from Fort Bragg Army Base.

Hope Mills is described as a "bedroom community" for Fort Bragg.

Suspect Charged In Texas Airport Explosives Case

FBI spokesman Mike Martinez said [Trey Scott] Atwater is being held at the Midland County jail and has been charged with trying to bring explosives onto an airplane.

He will remain in custody at least until his arraignment Tuesday, given that the courts are closed Monday for the holiday, Martinez said.

Atwater and his wife and family had been visiting relatives in the area and were on their way back to his base in North Carolina, according to local media reports.

Public records searches list addresses for Atwater at Fort Bragg and indicate he continues to have relatives in Midland.

It's unclear whether Atwater was in military uniform at the time he was detained, or how many explosives were in the bag.
