NO BIRDS in bird feeder for 3 weeks now!!!
I don't know what's happened to the birds this winter, but 3 weeks ago I put a feeder on the kitchen window and filled it with black sunflower seeds, and haven't seen a single bird!! The feeder is still full with seeds.

I've put this feeder up in the past, it attaches to the window and allows you to view the birds up close. Anytime I've put it up in the past, the birds found it within a day and soon it was filled, mostly with finches but we did get cardinals, sparrows, etc.

SO WHERE ARE THE BIRDS???!?!?!?!?!

No, we have birds that stay here every winter, mostly finches. And they're usually all over the feeder once you fill it in the winter.

your seeds may have gotten wet and moldy. They will not touch them if they are not good.

It was a fresh bag of seeds. It didn't rain. They usually find the seeds within 24 hours of filling the feeder.

Just what I was thinking. After a short while they scratch you off their 'route'.

Make sure its not stuck together and moldy.

Did you happen to notice a corresponding increase in the number of happy, fat alley cats in the area?

You know all the bird kills?

We believe there are 1,000-10,000 or more birds that die in the woods, for everyone that makes it onto TV.

the big black sunflower seeds are too big for most finches. You would want a smaller type of feed for finches. Blue jays should eat the big seeds though.

The winter birds have cycles. Ive not seen them for a few weeks and all of a sudden they show up in huge flocks and empty my feeder in a few days, then they disappear again

Just give it some time, they will be back. They come around in cycles.

Oddly, I have finches this year for the first time since I started putting out a feeder 4-5 years ago.

Also if you are feeding birds, you must feed them all the time. You cannot let the feeder go empty for a day or two or they will take awhile before they return.

OP I apologize, you must be my neighbor. One of my wife's fat cats are sitting under the feeder eating the poor birds.

No matter how much you feed them they go out and kill. Everything that moves!

I so dislike my wife's cats.

Rubbish. They all love them. Even goldfinches will go for them instead of thistle seeds. I've seen them do it.

Will you send me your unused bird seed? Got so many birds at my house I'm gonna be in the "poor house" soon.

Anybody know of a good source for wild bird seed online?

OP the weather is kind of screwed up right now. I live very near New Orleans and the Monarch Butterflies are hatching every few days in my garden, and caterpillers are growing and turning into the cocoons... strange. Very strange times indeed.

Okay. That is very doomy.

Just to clear up one more thing - since some people think this is the problem - are your seeds dry and mold free?

Not that I think that is the problem. I have never seen birds refuse them. And they take only a few days to find new stuff.

Did you know a lot of people have had dreams of a tsunami over New York city?

Anyone else from New York?

Like to put out some sunflower seeds and see what happens?

Or see if there are extra lost dog and cat ads?

Re: NO BIRDS in bird feeder for 3 weeks now!!!
We have our usual winter birds flocking to our feeders, and we also let the squirrels come. Our neighbor uses a whirl-a-squirrel feeder to knock them off his bird feeder, so we make sure to get them fed, too.

I've not noticed a decrease in "customers" over previous years, this in the Houston area. However, this year we have been visited several times by a falcon that has made a few kills. Any advice as to how to deal with this predator? He flies off if I or my dogs go outside, but I can't be there all the time watching out for the little birds. And, no, I'm not going to shoot him. I like all birds, I just wish this one would not have breakfast in my backyard on the smaller birds.

Sometimes I see him sitting on our fence, sometimes on a utility wire, and once on the boxwood hedge under my feeders.
