Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The new Dodge Dart, nothing like the 60's or 70's style. No small block in this car..... DETROIT - If the new Dodge Dart sells anything like the original, Chrysler will have the small-car hit it needs. The reinvented compact, unveiled at the Detroit auto show Monday, is nothing like its predecessor from the 1960s and `70s. But Chrysler is counting on the Dart, and its zippy name, to help it sell more small cars and continue its recent revival. Instead of the somewhat boxy lines of the original, the new Dart has the sleek stance of a modern muscle-car, with a short hood, long roof and slightly flared fenders. And it's based on the frame and suspension of a crisp-handling Alfa Romeo hatchback brought over by Chrysler's Italian owner, Fiat SpA. UNCUT: Dodge Dart RevealThe Dart also is a crucial test of the Chrysler-Fiat alliance, one aimed at saving millions of dollars by reusing Fiat frames, engines and technology, yet giving them an American style with more space for people and gear. The Dart is the first Chrysler designed jointly by the companies. Chrysler, which ran out of cash and had to be bailed out by the gubbermint in 2009, saw sales jump 26 percent last year, and it's poised to turn its first annual profit since 1997. Now the automaker needs a breakthrough in the growing small-car market, where it hasn't had success since the bug-eyed Dodge Neon in the mid-1990s. After nearly failing, Chrysler also realizes it must end its dependence on inefficient SUVs and pickups. Since the Neon, few have considered Chrysler compacts, keeping the company out of a market that has grown to about 15 percent of U.S. auto sales. Forty years ago, it was a different story. Back then, Dodge Darts were everywhere. Middle-class Americans bought nearly 3.3 million between 1960 and 1976, when Chrysler offered versions for every lifestyle: the stripped-down commuter car, convertibles, the family station wagon, and street racers like the Dart Swinger, which came with a racing stripe, hood scoops and a 340-cubic-inch V-8 engine. Sales peaked in 1974 at more than 340,000 when gasoline was a little over 50 cents per gallon and President Richard Nixon resigned during the Watergate scandal. "Dart buyers also can get touch-screen controls and can pick their own interior accent colors. There's a choice of three engines, including a Fiat-designed 1.4-liter turbo reserved for the muscle car edition."
Not a real Dart |

a car for under seventeen grand that gets fourty miles per gallon is useful for a commuter and will be useful for chrysler sales. Affordable car, overdue.
nissan downsized the sentra to the versa looking for a more economical option and versa sales have done well. Toyota has the yaris which is a small version of the corrolla which is the smaller version of the camry.
looks like this is chryslers answer. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8532206 i kinda disagree with this. The big three have done well going retro with the mustang, chargers, camaros etc. in recent years. They are also putting out more power at better mpg. They dont make as much on making chargers, because less people buy chargers. But still make them just to keep with the tradition and for people like YOU. If you really look around, the car companys have bent over backwards, losing money on some models and near bankrupt a few years ago just to give someone like you the option of buying a car that is different. And you cant say they are all the same now. Nissan cube for instance. Not the same. Do yourself a favor, and them. Go buy yourself a new mustang or camaro. They still make them, will even if they lose money on them. Just for people like YOU. |

My family had a Dodge Dart "Hang 10" in the 70's. It wasn't boxy. It had a v8 engine too. It was a decent car. Nothing worth revisiting now though. The new design isn't very impressive IMO |

Had a 1978 powder blue dodge dart from when one of my relatives passed away. It had 3000 miles on it. Drove like a freaking boat, but I will say you'd have to go out of your way to kill that slant-6 engine. |

They could have done a lot better, sadly this is akin announcing they are redesigning the Camaro then showing a pic of a Yugo. Reminds me of the release of the Malibu, just sad. It's just a redesigned Cobalt with the same target market. Cobalt; 2008–2010 - 2.0 L Ecotec LNF Turbo I4 260 hp- 260 lb•ft Snip; 1.4-liter turbo engine. In a nutshell, the engines are the standard 2.0-liter 160-hp four, under the hood of our sample Dart Limited, the Fiat-designed Multi-Air 1.4-liter turbo, also with 160 hp but with a greater torque rating, plus the 2.4-liter TigerShark four with 184 hp. Dodge is hinting that there might also be a turbo-edition of this motor down the road, with close to 250 hp. [ link to fenceviewer.com] this is a dart I'm only human, it's my biggest flaw.
