The recession ruined Linda Ruggles’ business and she has been selling plasma twice a week since to make ends meet. The blood bank couldn’t bail her out from behind bars though, which is where she ended up after she couldn’t pay a $480 fine.

That fine, say cops in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, came about because Linda Ruggles had a messy yard.

Barely getting by in recent years, Ruggles, 53, has been stockpiling scraps to pawn off in order to make her bill payments. In her yard rests a pile of metal that she routinely cashes in to get by. Elsewhere outside her house is a shack of shingles. Paying to have her roof fixed, often a job that comes at a cost of several thousand dollars, has been out of the question.

So when cops ticketed her $480 for having a messy yard, Ruggles wasn’t exactly prepared to pay it.

I can see your point Brief, but we don't KNOW that. Nor do we know the circumstances of her life. Nor do YOU know that a similar fate could not befall you.

However, personally, I am done paying fines for anything. If I do something "wrong" they can send me to jail, where I will not pay a damn dime to a corrupt system. No lawyers, no fines, no court costs.

And, people, please realize that the public is now paying to house and feed this woman for 10 days and paying her fine for her. A fine for a ridiculous "crime". A messy yard is not the end of the world, and it harms none. Its not as though it were piles of food scrap and causing a pest nuisance.

dosn't matter how much you pay on mortgage, you lose your income evenutally your not going to be able to pay - even if you paid in full for the house due to property taxes. Everyone needs some sympothy for the difficult times were in as they will only become worse as our muslim president gives our country away with the blessings of his supporters.

Hmm, so we need to be clairvoyant before we buy our places of residence? How many people can forsee the future? No one expects to fall on hard times.
