Woman jailed for 10 days because she's too poor to pay fine

The recession ruined Linda Ruggles’ business and she has been selling plasma twice a week since to make ends meet. The blood bank couldn’t bail her out from behind bars though, which is where she ended up after she couldn’t pay a $480 fine.

That fine, say cops in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, came about because Linda Ruggles had a messy yard.

Barely getting by in recent years, Ruggles, 53, has been stockpiling scraps to pawn off in order to make her bill payments. In her yard rests a pile of metal that she routinely cashes in to get by. Elsewhere outside her house is a shack of shingles. Paying to have her roof fixed, often a job that comes at a cost of several thousand dollars, has been out of the question.

So when cops ticketed her $480 for having a messy yard, Ruggles wasn’t exactly prepared to pay it.

If she wants to run a junkyard she needs to find a place zoned for it...sounds like she bought too much house and can't afford to live there...

NO ONE has the right to tell otehrs what to do. Have you forgotten that this is "supposed" to be a free country? Asl ong as someone isn't physically harming anyone else...no one else should have hand or sya in how you decide to live! I would be willing to bet BRIEF and others..that you have atleast one snobby rich neighbor(s) that might thinf that YOU aren't good enough to live near them and your car that some rust shwoing on it and isn't as GOOD as their mercedes...would like to turn you in for having a "junk-car" on your property...maybe they even don't like the way you keep your yard!? Think about it folks. Don't be so anal.

maybe what you need to do is offer to help the poor woman carry her shit to the place where she can exchange it for money so she can pay her fucking bills. ya know, help a neighbor out? lousy humans always fighting about the most pathetic things, like a pile of matal in not-your-property.

Right on Dude! I would say you don't like the view...there's 359 degrees of other directions you can look at. If you don't like a neighborhood...don't f-ing buy a house there...obviously the place was already like that more than likely. And if things were'nt so tough these days we wouldn't have people stock-piling metals etc to do thing sin the future with. People could afford maybe to cut their grass more often? Then again some people such as myself like the nature look...you know the land the way it WAS befire man started his stupid bullshit of destroying nature's view?

I am astonished at the number of uncaring responses to this woman's predicament.....All I can say is "You should hope that you don't find yourself in her unwelcome position. No one will care."

I have a five car garage and two barns where I keep my vehicles...I don't care about snobby neighbors as long as they keep their yappy dog quiet.

My argument is that she should have bought less home, she probably assumed she would never lose her job and bought a place she can't afford.

Well good for you BRIEF!...but you missed the point! Point is...your neighbors could find a multitude of shit to complain about you and have some official of somesort pounding on your door. Maybe they will say you keep your kids locked in their bedrooms and never let them out of the house? Understand? Btw, I actually had this happen to me...true story. Ofcourse it wasn't true...but someone can call "anonymously" and make a complaint w/out any PROOF just to harrass you! It's "not cool" to have others busy-bodying into YOUR affairs or MINE just because they dont' like you for whatever reason.

When it gets down to where the accumulated debris becomes a health and safety issue, is where the authorities need to step in. I am very anti-government on most things, but sometimes they need to do the job we elected them for.

We have people in our neighborhood(recent immigrants), who constantly were dumping big pots of old food right in the alley, NOT the garbage can. We were starting to see rats around here. I called the city after our cat killed a rat in my back yard, close to the back of my house.
My house is neat and clean, and my yard is too. I scrap, but I have bins to keep the scrap in, and when I get a car full, I take it right in. I do not want to attract vermin, and I have respect for my neighbors.

Yeah those moist-backs don't know the concept of bagging their garbage...they take the term "throw away" literally to mean just throw it away from themselves...out a window from the second floor or toss it in an alley, they don't give a shit.
