I think shutting sites down will be a big "Wake Up Call" to people of what is to come. The sites that do this should post in big letters on their page,

"THIS IS WHAT YOU'LL GET IF YOU SUPPORT SOPA/PIPA!"

mmmm...I should be in bed...tomorrrow I am going to turn into a warewolf or something

I like your turn "watercooler"

I think its an original name for a web site...so...

So with that in mind I am going to ask for some help to get a new social web site going called "WATERCOOLER" and if you would like to go back and read what my general aspirations are, I think you and other readers will get the idea of what that site will be about.

But...

I need help...

I have built a very amateurish web site before but nothing that could or would be capable of going where this will need to go...so please if you have skills and are prepared to help...designers, moderators..etc.

eventually the whole big picture, then that is my ambition and Im prepared to work to launch and co-ordinate it all, it'll be a huge buzz and just maybe we'll bring about some worthwhile and valuable change here and there, its worth a try...so

who's up for it.

You can email me and I'll get back to you and we can start up a team that we can grow...

lets do it..
 Quoting: arkay

You just committed one of the great offenses of web design.

First of all, people with those skills don't do it for free except in very special, very rare cases. The response you are likely to get is read the fucking manual and learn how to create a site yourself.

You just asked for a staff of web designers to create, implement and manage a website based on some drunken lofty idea.

If you want a website, do it your fucking self.

Folks, you are all doing great work here keeping this topic alive.

As OP, (no egos here), I would like to thank you all for your contributions, all of which have been beneficial.

More importantly, it is most notable and totally commendable that there has been a complete absence of abusive language or insult since this thread began and that has to be an absolute plus for which I salute you all.

Clearly everyone that has either read or contributed here has a passion and genuine interest in something as important as this topic is.

In the land of Aus it is now way past the time when I might wake up a monster tomorrow, so, well the hope of beauty sleep is a long gone fantasy, never the less I do have a need for sleep.

So, with that thought I implore you all as the planet continues to spin , please add your thoughts and feelings.

Just to prod some direction I would personally love to hear suggestions and comments that might be somewhat futureistic in nature that might stimulate further thought and comment on how we as an internet community might be able to move into fresh and new areas of ways that we might be able to bring about beneficial and peaceful change to the world we live in...I am certain that this time is now right on our collective doorsteps, all we need to do now is recognise it, throw the ideas into the mix and see where the the cream floats to the top.

I am being totally selfish here but I dream of a new start, for a world of peace, equality and happiness and harmony for all, and I honestly believe the we can make that happen within a very short time from today.

Please dream and think about those things too, it wont hurt anyone.

I'll be back tomorrow, probably to a lot of black sites, but that will be good.

Till then be safe, live well and find peace.

Thanks for the good words, but put down the crack pipe. The internet is no more capable of fixing social issues than fighting it out in the streets is. Not sure where this utopian result you envision is gonna come from. It's not the internet. If anything the internet allows some level of anonymity, which promotes and has increased hate speech, and general hostile interactions. You haven't noticed this? Being anonymous is the facilitator for massively aggressive and rude interactions, not social healing.

SOPA is dead, for now, can it really be?

From the Raspberry Pi website

Update, Jan 16: Some people have been emailing us, tweeting us and leaving comments below to tell us that SOPA is dead, because it’s been shelved by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (without his giving any reason; the widespread discontent that has been expressed and the White House’s threat of a veto may have something to do with it, though). This is indeed good news; but it does not mean that the bill will not resurface with minor tweaks; and it also does not mean that PIPA, the Senate version of the same bill (see below) will not be stopped too. So we will still be going dark on the 18th. So will Wikipedia, Reddit and many other sites which are much more visible than ours.

The INTERNET should go dark in the USA in protest.

GLP should join in the cause. The question I have is, IS there a Nation or place were WIKI and GLP and other sites can relocate to? Is their a way to drop just the USA?

Perhaps a blackout would wake people up. Let a nation or Country that values freedom enjoy the work of great men and women who have given us their knowledge on the INTERNET freely.

We wont get any news.

And we should not, if people refuse to protest NOW then they are already lost. If they support this law then they are already listening to the MSM

Those of us who know the truth will have to get off our butts and start anew, Homegrown Internets, and the like.

Any attempt to control the INTERNET, should cause website owners to boycott that nation. Any nation smart enough to allow freedom and the INTERNET will have a huge advantage over nations with only propaganda to learn from.

What are the alternatives?

One option, of course, is that Congress does nothing and leaves the current laws in place.

Alternative legislation has also been proposed. A bipartisan group of House members has begun drafting the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act (OPEN), a compromise bill.

Among other differences, OPEN offers more protection than SOPA would to sites accused of hosting pirated content. It also beefs up the enforcement process. It would allow digital rights holders to bring cases before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), an independent agency that handles trademark infringement and other trade disputes.

OPEN's backers have posted the draft legislation online and invited the Web community to comment on and revise the proposal.
