do you visit the green room? visit and share your karma daily. you can earn a free upgrade. I just about have enough points to give away another one. I will give it to you when I get enough.

How exactly does it work?
 Quoting: El Quisqueyano

Easy --

Step 1) Go in there and say hi, and let everyone know you would like to participate so they know you are there.

Step 2) give away your karma to people in the room. when you give karma make sure you leave your name on it, so people know who you are and can pay you back.

Step 3) After giving it away, go in the green room, and let everyone know who you gave it away too. (you can see examples in the room)

That is it! The cycle will continue and before you know it you will have a lot of karma that you can use for your hearts desire.

I like to give away memberships and pin threads for people.

A lot of times people give me karma that are not karma room regulars, but the same holds true, if they leave their name, I pay it back hf

Hope you join

(sorry for derailing thread)
 Quoting: V-Honey

Or do it the lazy way like I do. I show up and give karma to everyone till I run out. I get almost everyone each week, so I don't worry about not getting anyone in particular. I just sign it with my name and pass it out.

Then I leave a post saying I dropped off karma. Magically I get 5-6 green karmas a day back.

This has allowed me to upgrade myself and give away 3 trial memberships. The green room is magic.

Re: All Eyes on Lake Vostok...To Be Breached Today!!!
All kidding aside.
Some wonder if an alien object is down there.

Consider the magnetic flux lines flowing into the area. Orbital objects could easily be entrained towards the poles just as particles forming aurorae are.

A ZP machine riding on magnetic flux could venture via these pathways.

Old orbiting monolithic materials could transit along these pathways.

All potential BS, but fun thinking about it.
 Quoting: just a dude

Yes, it's perplexing isn't it!

The magnetic anomaly is what first grabbed my attention to this story.

From what I have researched, the anomaly is real, but all the stories of JPL and NSA are all bullshit.

I wish I could be on the next plane out!

The water in the lake could be maintained by microorganisms such as these, or at least the dome could be.

They secrete a protein that inhibits recrystallization of water. This in turn affects frozen structure to where crystal-like structures are replaced by granular ones. The bacteria survive/(thrive?) in the veinous medium that spreads through the grain boundaries...

I am beyond confused, but I guess this is what happens when you forget to follow threads that interest you (for example, the Bezerk and Chinese Briefcase threads, a hundred pages later.)

When this thread was posted, I saw the title and went: "Yikes!"...immediately envisioning the potential doom of a massive escape of methane. My interest was excited.

But, upon reading the first page and reading more at the links, we were being told the lake contained a rich concentration of oxygen, and that they were trying to insure that the drill's breach would NOT allow contamination of this ancient, unique, biosphere that they were hoping to discover.

That sounded plausible, so I put aside my methane 'worries,' although I wished I was educated enough to understand HOW they could figure out there was oxygen-rich fresh water, yet, not know if it held any lifeforms.

The off-site page offered other links, where I then read about the bizarre magnetic anomalies, and, that ginormous metallic object, found about the same time that drilling started. BUT...

...having read in the first article that due to drill failure (if I am remembering this correctly) the drilling project had to be abandoned for 8 YEARS: all of this started to sound a bit fishy to me...as someone who visits GLP might be prone to consider. I never read the remaining pages, having turned my attentions elsewhere.

NOW I come back to page 13, and see a letter WARNING about METHANE.

I guess I have a lot of reading to catch up on tonight, before making another comment......

only 2 meters a day through ICE??? What the hell!

I can and have drilled a 8 inch hole through a meter of ice in 5 minutes with a hand operated ice drill while ice fishing in the U.P. Like to have a lot of holes available while ice fishing so I invested in a little gas powered ice drill that can drill a 8 inch hole through a meter of ice in 30 seconds.

For this fact alone this shit story stinks to high heaven! Through most ROCK drilling rigs normally do about 200 feet a day MINIMUM

Maybe this is why they are really there...

“You know, they have classified Lake Vostok. They took it away from JPL who were monitoring it. Are you familiar with Lake Vostok in Antarctica? Under the ice in Antarctica there is a fresh-water lake deep, deep down under the ice, that’s 100 miles long and 50 miles wide. Fresh water. The temperature in the damn lake is about 65 degrees, which is pleasant swimming, you might say.

“But at the end of Lake Vostok is what’s known as a gigantic masscon—a mass concentration of metal, very similar to the masscons they discovered on the Moon — a gigantic, circular-shaped, metallic object deep under the ice at the end of Lake Vostok. The National Security Agency took it away from JPL. It’s one of the most sensitive things in the world now, the anomaly at the end of the lak. It’s now classified, top secret.”

This is kind of messed up. Talk about evasion.

Comment From Davey
Have either of you heard or read about a large metallic object in Lake Vostic? If so, what are your conclusions?
3:49

Scott Borg:
No - I've not heard of any evidence of a large metallic object in Lake Vostok. Of course its easy to speculate. But there is really good geophysical data (magnetics and gravity) that show the lake basin to be related to a well-understood geological structures
with the continent - so pretty normal stuff - but still interesting. Some of the best data were taken by Columbia University with NSF support and are all published.

Thanks for the link; it was fascinating to read.

Considering that the bacterium isolate 3519-10 found at Vostok survives in a veinous matrix of ice crystals, it is interesting that many researchers choose an E. coli in their study; E. coli construct tubular structures in order to pass into their host's cell membrane, after which they express agents that lead to the breakdown of the cell, causing it to die and leak it's contents. Both of these bacterium express agents that cause fluidity, yet, while one is live sustaining, the other destroys.

====================================

Now, I wonder what these bacteria are eating to survive...or, are have they just been in suspended animation all this time? That's eerie, considering that the article states: "Geomicrobiological investigations of the Vostok 5G ice core have provided data on the characteristics of cells entrapped in ice for as long as 420,000years... "

Thanks for the link!

Every so often I tiptoe back to it, but it's really very alarming. It's a rabbit hole I wish I'd never heard about, even with Fukushima hanging over us. It's rather hard to wrap your mind around all of the things that should NOT exist. When someone plays with fire, people are bound to be hurt.

Re: All Eyes on Lake Vostok...To Be Breached Today!!!
This week, a Russian team drilling into Lake Vostok in the center of the Antarctic continent is likely to break through the ice to water. It will be the first time that a subglacial lake has been breached. These modern-day explorers hope to discover whether Vostok, which at 5000 km 3 is the third largest lake on the planet, is teeming with hidden, cold-loving life that could have evolved separately from the rest of the world for hundreds of thousands of years.

Microbiologist John Priscu of Montana State University in Bozeman, who was one of the original planners of the Vostok mission, has been getting regular updates from the Russian team. As of 13 January, they had reached a depth of 3737.5 meters, about 15 meters away from liquid water. With three teams drilling around the clock and making progress at an average of 2 meters per day, Priscu says they're on track to break through within the week. "This is an epic event. I really wish them luck," he says. "I wish I was out there with them."

After drilling 3720 meters last February, time ran out for the team and the project was stymied just 29.5 meters from its destination as winter set in. Over the summer, they modified their drill bits and now the team is back at work with plenty of time to spare. They had left the large hole filled with antifreeze, so it was ready and waiting for them. It will remain open for years to come, Priscu says, potentially allowing other teams to sample the waters in the future.

It's a nerve-wracking moment for the drillers, however. The lake water is under immense pressure, making it imperative that the team's calculations are correct. In the worst case scenario, Priscu says, "water could come up the hole and degas explosively, blowing out the whole borehole."

[link to news.sciencemag.org]

Obviously, this is uncharted territory, a first for mankind.
sounds like many things could go wrong. I wish them all the best!

This is incredible news! For 14 millian years it has been sealed under the ice. If life exists in Lake Vostok it will further the evidence that life can exist elsewhere in the cosmos, such as Jupiter's moon Europa and beyond.

If the Russians stay on schedule, they should breach the lake by tomorrow!

I can't wait to hear about their findings.

RazorX
 Quoting: RazorX 1378340

I'm sure we'll receive a full, unedited report of findings. Wonder if they'll mention that large object that has been giving off radiation ever since it was discovered on the edge of the lake? Naaaahhhh....

Good morning dr.

This is one of the most interesting threads that have come by in a while. The entire idea of what Antarctica actually is, is mind boggling. I am seeing it in an entirely different light.

K+ for you OP, totally intriguing.
Men shouldn't be digging so deep into the earth, look what they did in the Gulf of Mexico......there are probably some bizarre creepy demon-things living down there.....

I know why.

Its because January 23, 2012 begins the year of the Chinese Water Dragon.

Water doom.

Doom on a stick.

Hibachi smokin' dragon spittin' methane into the atmosphere kinda doom.

They'll simply release the water dragon and set him free.
And he's cranky.

Re: All Eyes on Lake Vostok...To Be Breached Today!!!
Hmmm...

Maybe the water will have bubbles because it's saturated with methane...

Will look like in the movie, but for a different reason...
