Last year, the team at Vostok station had to be flown out by February 5, before unsafe conditions prevailed. It is now January 24. Time is running out to finish the job. An article I read earlier stated that if the Russians failed to drill through Lake Vostok in these two months of summer, the British on the other side of Antarctica would be the first to drill into and explore a sub-glacial lake. This is scheduled for December 2012 at Lake Ellsworth. Lake Vostok is south of Perth, Australia. Lake Ellsworth is south of Argentina. It makes you wonder if politics or sabotage are affecting the Russian effort to be first to reach these mysterious, unexplored waters. Of course, Lake Vostok is the most interesting because of the metal mass and legends of the Rainbow City. |

It does not surprise me that they have been quiet about it. The competition between these countries is fierce. To be the FIRST to drill into one of these sub-glacial lakes would be a prestigious scientific achievement (to say nothing of the other evidence we suspect they are really looking for under the ice). I'm sure a successful breach into the pristine environment would be announced promptly. No news is not good news in this particular situation. Some other websites have discussed the risk of this drilling operation. The pressure of 4,000 m (13,100 ft) of ice could result in an explosion when popped. Another risk is the creation of a giant sinkhole as the warm water/air from Lake Vostock rushes up the drill hole, melting the sides. To the other GLP poster - we'd have to go DOWN, DOWN, not up to take a tour at the Antarctic. A webcam would be fantastic but the secrecy of these operations would never allow it (which tells you something right there). |

This from Voice of Russia, which is the Russian government's international radio broadcasting service: Jan 26, 2012 16:31 Moscow Time Can Antarctic ices cool global warming? snip At present, Russian scientists are intending to explore a lake of unfrozen water, situated under a thick layer of ice, in the Antarctic. This lake, called “Vostok”, which is the Russian for “east”, is probably the largest reservoir of water “hidden” under the ice in the Antarctic. Russian explorers are drilling a hole in the ice which covers the lake, and now, only about 20 meters are left to get to the unfrozen water. [link to english.ruvr.ru] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 9160988 United States 01/26/2012 07:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Also, the date in which the lake was the breached was in Dec. 2012 not last week. There are tricks to the drilling not only do they not want to introduce any outside material, but they are worried about the release of the pressure. TO fix this they are drilling in multiple areas along this subglacial lake system (there are multiple lakes connected in antartica). "British, Russian and American science teams are all trying to become the first to sample an ancient Antarctic lake. These lakes are buried under miles of ice and have been isolated from the outside world for at least 125,000 years – maybe a million years. On January 15, 2012, the British Antarctic Survey Press Office announced that a team of four engineers had successfully placed 70 British tonnes of equipment in place on the Antarctica subglacial Lake Ellsworth. The planned assault on the lake is for December 2012." [link to earthsky.org] Honestly I dont think ppl get how incredibly stupid this is. 15 million years of isolation. Do you understand 15 million years? They think they can get to the lake without contaminating it. But as soon as they open the seal air will get it and the introduction of just one bacteria could change the state of the lakes from there on out and we will never get a true reading of what we want. Its incredibly stupid IMO. |
