A member of a gang of notorious jewel thieves nicknamed the Pink Panthers has been arrested in Italy.

Mitar Marianovic, 60, a Montenegrin of Serbian background, was arrested after police allegedly found his fingerprints on a plastic bag left behind during the lightning raid.

The gang is also suspected of having been behind about 120 robberies in Britain, Germany, Monaco, Spain, France, Japan and Luxembourg, stealing jewellery worth up to $222 million.

'Nobody seems to be in charge'

Just four hours after a tsunami swept into the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Japan’s leaders knew the damage was so severe that the reactors could melt down, but they kept their knowledge secret for months.

Five days into the crisis, then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan voiced his fears that it could turn worse than Chernobyl.

The revelations were in documents released Friday, almost a year after the disaster. The minutes of the government’s crisis management meetings from March 11 - the day the earthquake and tsunami struck - until late December were not recorded and had to be reconstructed retroactively.

They illustrate the confusion, lack of information, delayed response and miscommunication among government, affected towns and plant officials, as some ministers expressed the sense that nobody was in charge when the plant conditions quickly deteriorated.

The minutes quoted an unidentified official explaining that cooling functions of the reactors were kept running only by batteries that would last just eight hours.

‘‘If temperatures in the reactor cores keep rising beyond eight hours, there is a possibility of meltdown,’’ the official said during the first meeting, which started about four hours after the magnitude-9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami hit the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, setting off the crisis.

‘‘Who is the leader of the actual operation? I get too many requests and appeals that are incoherent,’’ Yoshihiro Katayama, internal affairs minister at the time, said at a March 15 meeting. ‘‘Nobody seems to be in charge.’’

End of Japan's whaling a step closer

The end of Japan's whaling program is a step closer with Australia having received Japan's written response to a legal challenge in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the government says.

In coming weeks, the ICJ, in consultation with Australia and Japan, will set a timeline for the next steps, which which may include a second round of written submissions.

"The government considers that Japan's whaling is contrary to Japan's international legal obligations, including the global prohibition on commercial whaling, and should stop."

Queensland man films massive jellyfish swarm

The video was filmed last Sunday in Moreton Bay, where marine biologists say there is currently a major jellyfish outbreak.

Rod Thompson, 62, was sailing with his wife Maria on their 40-foot boat near Green Island in the bay when they saw the enormous cluster ahead.

"I thought we were going to run into a sandbank,"

University of Queensland marine biologist Kathy Townsend said blooms of blue blubbers (Catostylus mosaicus) were not unusual in the bay

"When I first came here, which was 12 years ago, regularly during the summer we'd have big blooms of jelly fish

"But then we went through a really long patch, which was associated with the big dry spell we had, where we weren't getting the blooms at all.

"But then I think in the 2011-12 summer we've started to see the blooms again."

She said the jellyfish were harmless to humans and provided a food source to animals such as turtles.

Killer Martin Bryant painting causes stir

Awarding a $35,000 art prize for a painting that shows Port Arthur gunman Martin Bryant is causing a stir in Tasmania.

Launceston-born Mr Pople accepted the award in northern Tasmania on Friday after the competition's three judges agreed it was the outstanding work.

But the decision to award the prize to Mr Pople has been criticised by a former police officer who was at the scene of Bryant's rampage, which resulted in the deaths of 35 people in 1996.

"I am not in any way glorifying Martin Bryant but to ignore it is looking in the wrong way as well."

Have you been waking up and going to sleep feeling like you have spent the entire day and night in a taffy pulling machine? Not only is your physical body and energy body being expanded at this time, so is the entirety of Life!

I find all of this so exciting to watch it come together and play out when only last month, it was a metaphor of understanding. So this morning I did some back tracking to put a bigger picture together.

Thru the beginning of February I had seen the end of February like a huge pregnant fire-ball. I had also seen it exploding and releasing intense waves of energy into March… carrying all of Life with it.

I am so grateful for spaceweather.com and the archives it keeps. I started looking into the end of February to see if I could see the date this explosion started. Sure enough!! February 24th the archives on spaceweather gave this perfect description:

Even our psychic senses are hitting new octaves. Clarity of vision and hearing. Feeling the CME’s as they erupt, or even before they do, then of course those flat-out down days where you can barely get off the couch so a complete integration can take place. Phew!!

But as I can see it this morning, there is a congealing taking place at the higher levels of energy. For so long we have been random bits of spiritual potential… It is funny even as I write that line I can see a huge vat of soup. All the ingredients in the vat of soup is from the Harvest that was opened several days ago are now congealing together to form your next greatest expression. That sure takes a lot of the work out of our end!!

AUSTRALIA'S Defence Force chief David Hurley was present when a lawyer for the cadets embroiled in the ADFA Skype sex scandal alleged he was manhandled out of a room last year by another senior officer.

Underlining the tensions within the defence force over the case that has sparked calls for Defence Minister Stephen Smith's resignation, the allegations have triggered an ongoing investigation by the Australian Federal Police.

It's understood that a Melbourne-based lawyer and navy reservist, Frank Cahill, has provided police with a sworn statement detailing the allegations.

They centre on claims that the Australian Defence Force Academy's legal officer Lt-Commander Bryan Cook was grabbed by the shoulder and shoved backwards by a senior army officer in April last year at the height of the scandal, before the door was slammed shut in his face. In addition to the senior officer, there were two other men present, General Hurley and Admiral James Goldrick, who later acted as the ADFA commandant after Bruce Kafer was stood down.

Although the cares of my consular office prevent me from devoting my entire attention to these studies, yet it seems to me a sort of public service to instruct my fellow citizens in the products of reasoned investigation... I am glad to assume the... task of educating our present society in the spirit of Greek philosophy... this is truly a part of my consular duty...

There will be no end to the troubles of... humanity... till philosophers become kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands.

In the myth of the cave, Republic 514 ff, those who climb out of the cave and see the real world and the sun must go back down to free the other prisoners still watching shadows. This is politics, properly understood; freeing mankind from delusions, turning them toward reality. In the Republic Plato describes the curriculum for the education of such philosophical rulers. It includes music (Rep. 398 ff), mathematics (524 ff) - including arithmetic, geometry and astronomy - and dialectic (531 ff). These are the subjects of some of Boethius' books (mentioned by Watts, p.13) - his Music, Arithmetic, Geometry (now lost), Astronomy (also lost), and his various works on logic (logic is part of what Plato meant by dialectic).

The philosophical schools of Alexandria were following this Platonic curriculum. Boethius' works on these subjects are translations of, or are closely based on, the textbooks used in those schools. In the Alexandrian schools they read Plato, and also Aristotle. According to the neo-Platonists Aristotle's philosophy was for the most part complementary to Plato's, not in serious conflict with it.

Porphyry (who edited the works of the founder of neo-Platonism, Plotinus) was especially keen on Aristotle. He wrote an introduction to Aristotle's writings on logic. He also wrote a work entitled, "On the unity of the doctrines of Plato and Aristotle", which would perhaps have been the basis of the book Boethius planned to write to prove the same thesis.
