Investigation into dugong poaching claims

A government investigation has been launched into claims turtles and dugongs are being poached and cruelly killed in far north Queensland.

Environment Minister Vicky Darling has ordered the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) to investigate the claims made by ABC Television.

"I was disturbed when I saw the footage, as I expect were many other viewers," Ms Darling said.

Full Titanic debris map revealed

RESEARCHERS have pieced together the first comprehensive map of the entire 5km-by-8km Titanic debris field.

"With the sonar map, it's like suddenly the entire room lit up and you can go from room to room with a magnifying glass and document it," he said. "Nothing like this has ever been done for the Titanic site."

The map provides a forensic tool with which scientists can examine the wreck site much the way a plane wreck would be investigated.

"When you look at the sonar map, you can see exactly what happened," said Nargeolet, who has been on six Titanic expeditions.

By examining the debris, investigators can now answer questions like how the ship broke apart, how it went down and whether there was a fatal flaw in the design.

AN exhibition of cultural objects which speak of the history and influence of Alexander the Great is coming to Sydney, and will open at the Australian Museum on November 24.

It was announced yesterday that the exhibition will be the largest collection of treasures ever to come to Australia from the world-renowned State Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia.

The museum said another highlight of the exhibition is the figure of Heracles fighting the lion, from the 2nd century AD.

It was thanks to the Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great, and her fascination with Alexander that the Hermitage’s collection of Alexander-related objects is so rich.

Washington: Planetary scientists claim to have discovered a distant young galaxy cluster located 10.5 billion light years away from Milky Way.

Galaxy clusters are the "urban centres" of the universe and may contain thousands of galaxies.

An international team says that it identified the new galaxy cluster, which is made up of a dense concentration of 30 galaxies that is the seed for a much bigger "city", using the Magellan 6.5-metre telescope in Chile. The galaxy cluster is located in a region near the star constellation Leo.

Haitians seek UN redress for cholera victims

Hundreds of Haitians have marched from the United Nation's base in the capital, Port-au-Prince, to the country's parliament, demanding compensation and justice for the victims of the cholera epidemic blamed on the global body's peacekeepers.

The protesters said they want the UN to be held accountable, but the organisation denies any responsibility.

Brian Concannon, director of the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti and one of the lawyers who has filed claims against the UN on behalf of cholera victims, put the blame on the UN.

Concannon told Al Jazeera: "The proximate cause of the epidemic are the UN and they are to blame."

Cholera has killed more than 7,000 people and made more than 526,000 others sick since it was introduced to Haiti in 2010, according to Haitian health officials.

MICRORAPTOR dino-pigeon lured mates with glowing feathers

It would have picked holes in your eyeballs if it got its little claws on your face, but it might have glowed prettily just before it did.

Scientists from Beijing and the US have discovered that the pigeon-sized Microraptor dinosaur would have had nice shiny feathers after painstakingly analysing a fossil found in Northern China.

When the researchers delved into the nano-structure of the fossilised feathers, they found the same narrow stacks of organelles and were able to estimate the shininess of the dino, which has been dead for 120 million years.

The discovery about the feathers has also lead the scientists to another conclusion about Microraptor: it is likely that it flew the skies looking for soft meat around dawn and dusk, rather than night as previously thought.
