Giant freak lightning storms rumble across Western Australia

Posted on January 20, 2012

January 20, 2012 – AUSTRALIA – Four people have been struck by lightning and thousands are without power as dangerous weather sweeps Perth and the outer metropolitan coast. The State Emergency Service has warned people to stay safe as the storm sweeps through Perth and the coast from Lancelin to Mandurah. A man was hit by lightning in Mandurah at 4am and St John Ambulance confirmed later today that a man was struck by lightning in Baldivis and was taken to Rockingham Hospital. Another person was struck by lightning in Welshpool. None of the lightning victims have life-threatening injuries. A St John Spokeswoman said that they had received a call for a fourth person struck by lightning in Myaree but that the ambulance was cancelled. Homes have been damaged, floods are causing concern on the roads and domestic and international flights have been delayed. The storm has left at least 22,000 homes without power, mainly in the south metropolitan region, and also caused delays on the Mandurah to Perth railway line as bad weather hampered repairs. Train services were back to normal by lunchtime. Western Power is attending to the blackouts and SES volunteers have responded to at least 75 calls for help, mostly for flooding. Damage has been reported from Swan to Armadale to Rockingham and Mandurah, but most of the calls have come from Rockingham and Mandurah. More dangerous weather is coming between Minilya, Mount Augustus, Paynes Find, Corrigin, Narrogin, Mandurah, along the coast to Dongara and inland to Minilya, including the Perth metropolitan area. “If you live between Minilya, Mount Augustus, Paynes Find, Corrigin, Narrogin, Mandurah, along the coast to Dongara and inland to Minilya, including the Perth metropolitan area, you should take action with more dangerous weather to come,” FESA said. –Perth Now [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Tornado in Australia on Friday, 20 January, 2012 at 08:52 (08:52 AM) UTC.

Description
A tornado has hit the Bredbo region this afternoon as Canberrans are warned to prepare for severe thunderstorms. A severe thunderstorm warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 5.11pm carried the information that a tornado had been reported in the Bredbo area south of Canberra with hailstones at least 2cm in size. The Bureau is warning that destructive winds, large hailstones, very heavy rainfall and flash flooding could be expected over the next few hours across Canberra, Cooma, Yass, Goulburn, Bombala, Young, Condobolin, West Wyalong, Mudgee and Bathurst. The bureau also issued a storm warning for last night, although it missed much of the ACT. The bureau said there was an 80 per cent chance of rain in Canberra tomorrow, including the chance of isolated morning showers and "scattered showers and thunderstorms from midday". It also forecast possible showers each day until the end of next week. Weatherzone meteorologist Alex Zadnik said rainfall had bucketed down across Cooma during the day, with two separate severe storm cells crossing the town. A total of 45mm of rain was recorded between 9am and 4pm, with 11mm of this falling in the space of 10 minutes. He said the severe thunderstorm activity seen so far today had been triggered by a low pressure trough over southern NSW, combined with high levels of atmospheric moisture. This low pressure trough would remain slow-moving tomorrow, so there would again be the risk of thunderstorms across much of NSW, but particularly on and west of the Dividing Range. The trough would weaken and drift westwards on Sunday, reducing the risk of severe storm activity over NSW on this day. The State Emergency Service is advising people to move cars under cover and secure loose items.

Extreme Weather in Australia on Friday, 20 January, 2012 at 04:28 (04:28 AM) UTC.

Description
A third person has been struck by lightning this morning, after a severe thunderstorm swept over the city this morning. The storm ripped through the south metro area this morning, causing havoc with the power supply, bringing down branches and causing minor flooding. A warning was issued for the Perth metro area as the storm shifted north. People in areas bound by Lancelin, Northam and Narrogin were told to prepare for damaging winds, heavy rainfall and possible hail. Multiple thunderstorms are expected to hit Perth this afternoon following intense lightning early this morning. Weather bureau forecaster Nadine Baillard said while the storms were easing off for now, higher temperatures would see them build up again this afternoon. One person was hit by lightning at 4am on Wyeree Road in Mandurah and was taken to Peel Health Campus and a second person was struck at 4:30am on Brennan Promenade in Baldivis. He was taken to Rockingham Hospital. A third person was taken to hospital by ambulance after he was struck at about 9am. The 42-year-old man was working at Hertz in Welshpool when the whole office reported hearing a massive crack from outside the yard’s workshop, a colleague said.

They found the man lying on the ground and shaking. The colleague said it was believed he had not been directly struck. The weather caused delays at Perth Airport, with passengers waiting up to an hour for flights. A flight to Broome was cancelled after the aircraft which was being flown from Kalgoorlie had to turn back due to the weather in Perth. Thousands of homes were without power this morning as lightning strikes brought down the network in and around Mandurah. By 9.30am 22,000 customers were without power. The areas of greatest impact are in the south metropolitan region. More than 5000 customers were with out power in Mandurah, 5000 in Bibra Lake and more that 2500 in Dawesville. Other major areas affected include; Kalamunda, Murdoch, Hazelmere and Mundaring. Western Power crews are attending and it is expected that power will be restored throughout the morning however it is likely other areas will be affect as the lightning storm progresses south.
By 11am the State Emergency Service had received 75 calls for assistance. Damage has been reported from the City of Swan to Armadale, Rockingham and Mandurah. The majority of the calls have come from Rockingham and Mandurah.

Stoneville Shopping Centre has reported flooding and the PCYC in Rockingham has sustained some roof damage, according to a FESA spokesperson. Minor flooding on roads saw traffic slow to a crawl in parts of the metro area. Morning commuters faced delays on train services, with Mandurah and Joondalup lines delayed by up to 25 minutes. Westbound lanes on Great Eastern Highway are flooded between Grancey Avenue and Mann Street in Mundaring and Roe Highway is flooded around Berkshire Road in Forrestfield. A house was reportedly struck by lightning this morning in France Street in Mandurah this morning, but did not catch fire. Mandurah received a soaking this morning, recording 52.6ml rainfall, most of which fell between 5:30am and 7:40am. Bickley recorded 23mm this morning over a similar period. The Fire and Emergency Services Authority have warned people to secure all loose items, move vehicles under cover and stay inside away from windows. People are also advised to unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones if there is lightning.

Headline is a bit sensationalistic - the original headline says nothing about these being freak storms and in fact the article says the storms are not unusual..
