Gravitational time dilation is a PROVEN FACT, with PRACTICAL effects in GPS sattelites. There is no such thing as "present".
Gravitational time dilation is the effect of time passing at different rates in regions of different gravitational potential; the lower the gravitational potential, the more slowly time passes. Albert Einstein originally predicted this effect in his theory of relativity and it has since been confirmed by tests of general relativity.

This has been demonstrated by noting that atomic clocks at differing altitudes (and thus different gravitational potential) will eventually show different times. The effects detected in such experiments are extremely small, with differences being measured in nanoseconds.

Gravitational time dilation was first described by Albert Einstein in 1907[1] as a consequence of special relativity in accelerated frames of reference. In general relativity, it is considered to be a difference in the passage of proper time at different positions as described by a metric tensor of spacetime. The existence of gravitational time dilation was first confirmed directly by the Pound–Rebka experiment.

(...)

Experimental confirmation

Gravitational time dilation has been experimentally measured using atomic clocks on airplanes. The clocks aboard the airplanes were slightly faster with respect to clocks on the ground. The effect is significant enough that the Global Positioning System's artificial satellites need to have their clocks corrected.[2]

Additionally, time dilations due to height differences of less than 1 meter have been experimentally verified in the laboratory.[3]

Gravitational time dilation has also been confirmed by the Pound–Rebka experiment, observations of the spectra of the white dwarf Sirius B and experiments with time signals sent to and from Viking 1 Mars lander.

There is no such thing as "present".

Time flows at different paces in the place where your car with GPS is, and in the place where the GPS sattelites are, on Earth's orbit.

The onboard GPS in your car is not in the same "present" as the GPS sattelites.

What will really screw with your noodle is that the fact of time dilation categorically states we are currently in the future with respect to to objects traveling faster than us.

Spacetime is much more complex than what you may think.

"Present" is a worthless concept. What present? Who's present?

Time dilation caused speed / velocity is well-known by most people, and most people think of it as a highly theoretical and distant thing.

But few people know about gravitational time dilation. And most people don't know that gravitational time dilation has PRACTICAL effects, in the clocks of the GPS sattelites.

If that last statement screwed with your noodle, consider this.

If objects traveling faster than us are in our relative past, then the big bang, as the fastest moving object there is, is currently in our past.

This means we are currently in the future relative to the big bang, and as a result, it has not occurred yet.

We live in a VERY STRANGE Universe.

We live in a Universe where sattelites in orbit are NOT in the same "present" that we are, here in the surface of Earth.

The Spacetime is a very complex thing, and nobody can claim thay "time travel is impossible".

Consequences of the fact that the clocks of the GPS sattelites are affected by the low gravity:

- If gravity can deformate time, it means that time EXISTS

- If time exists, it means that time is NOT "just a human illusion", just a "convention created by humans". It's a physical thing, that can be altered by gravity.

- There are different "presents". So, we can't say that "past and future don't exist, only present". What present? There are many of them...

Consider this:

We can only use time dilation to move into the future, by slowing our own clocks down.

But what are we measuring when we measure time?

How does a clock slow down?

One way, is to effect distance. Thus, it is possible that time, as we know it, is an elastic form of space.

Present only exists within the mind. Everything you experienced happened in the past, and takes time to travel to your sensory input mechanisms. All decision you make are made in the present, and all outcomes effect the future.

We are ALL time travelers.

Some move faster in time, some slower, but always forward in a relativistic sense.

So, the real question is:

How can we control this. How can we increase the speed forward into time and how can we reverse time? It is only logical that if time can go at different speeds forward, there must be a way to manipulate time in the exact same manner, but in reverse.

I'm no good at science talk, because I don't know squat, but am interested in these questions-

Is it true that in order for a thing to "exist" it must be made up of matter?

Is there knowledge about the extent of the elasticity of time?

I was looking at a cross section of a human brain last night (a photo!) and suddenly saw the shape as the Big Bang. Neato.

1. Y-yes? I mean, Generally things need to be made of some kind of Particle. There are some particles that aren't made of "Matter" like Photons (Light.) but they're all generally measurable.

2. Time is a dimension like up or down. It could go on "Forever" like other dimensions, or be curved into nothingness.

Generally any object at rest with no gravity affecting it is traveling through it at light speed. Velocity and gravity can slow it down to nothing, in some cases.

Excerpt: February 26, 1998--One of the most bizarre premises of quantum theory, which has long fascinated philosophers and physicists alike, states that by the very act of watching, the observer affects the observed reality.

So is gravitational time dilation a quantum event? You could be stuck in the present for a 1000 years and not observe it.

Does this mean that light from other stars and galaxies moving through zero-g interstellar space has had its time altered, relative to us?

If so, could the apparent size/distance of other stars, the milky way, galaxies, and the visible universe actually be very different than it actually is? Based on this fact, maybe dark energy doesn't need to exist for galaxies to be galaxies. They're small enough to be gravitationally self-contained.

Time 101:

Imagine very tiny particles who's flow and interaction upon the other much larger sub-atomic particles cause the passage of time that we're accustomed to. When we discover these particles, and understand what makes them "tick", we'll learn how they can be manipulated, slowed down, stopped, reversed, and sped up. This will cause time in the manipulated locale to slow down, stop, unweave backwards into the past, or weave at an accelerated rate into the future. This is how time travel is accomplished, and is in our "future".

It is not "time dilation" it is dimensional dilation. Time is an arbitrary construct, it doesn't exist. What you are actually feeling is basically spreading yourself thin; being in more than one dimension at any given time.
