I have never actually seen Mr and Mrs Smith... that's one of the few I haven't seen. I need to get on that, a lot of people have told me it's really good.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is one of the few comedies Hitchcock did. A must see for any fan.

His TV shows were really good too.

I've got a box set of a bunch of his TV episodes. Love them. I remember watching them syndicated when I was a little kid.

I really wish they'd start releasing more of his films on blu-ray. So far all we have is Psycho and North By Northwest.

You're definitely not alone!

His genius seems to, unfortunately, be dying the face of today's mostly crap-tastic movies.

I know...Hollywood's gone down the drain...

He was pure genius - no other director could keep me at the edge of my chair watching a movie that takes place entirely in a single room! (Rope, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window are the best examples)

And for everyone to know, I'm not some kooky old fart remembering the good old days - I'm a college student! My generation, listen up: Alfred Hitchcock films are the best! Go to Blockbuster, Redbox, Netflix or even the Library if you have to and watch these classics! You'll be surprised to find out how awesome a 50-year old Black&White movie can be!

Funny, I started watching Hitchcock as a kid in the 80s and he was already dead by then.

Anyone like The Twilight Zone too?

Twilight Zone was good, if you wanted a sci-fi/fantasy twist to the mystery - Time Enough to Last, The Monsters are Due on Maple Street, The Eye of the Beholder, The Hunt, & The Dummy were all very well done episodes IMO.

However, if you wanted true suspense, Alfred Hitchcock was your man. A comparison of Rod Serling's adaptation (starring Inger Stevens) and Alfred Hitchcock's adaptation (starring Orson Welles worship) of "The Hitchhiker" shows that the most chills come from AH. wink

More bumps for Hitchcock! :D

Excellent point. I'm going to watch those back-to-back now!

How amazing were Hitchcock's special effects for the time? The guy was born in 1899 and started making movies in 20s. He revolutionized film.

Cool article on some of his special effects skills. [link to www.alfredhitchcockgeek.com]

Did you know he had a fear of eggs?! lol From his IMDB page: "I'm frightened of eggs, worse than frightened, they revolt me. That white round thing without any holes . . . have you ever seen anything more revolting than an egg yolk breaking and spilling its yellow liquid? Blood is jolly, red. But egg yolk is yellow, revolting. I've never tasted it."

chuckle That's Alfred for you - he could look dead serious while saying the funniest things (usually with a morbid twist)...that's partly why everyone liked him so much! :D

The AH version of the Hitch-Hiker was actually a radio drama, not a movie - the link to get it is a few posts up. cheers

My favorite is an episode from TV. A detective was certain the wife killed her husband, but couldn't find the blunt weapon she whacked him with. She invites the suspicious detective to Easter dinner...and serves him the previously-frozen leg of lamb.

I LOVE Rope!

Rear Window!

Vertigo (might be my favorite)

I loved Lifeboat too.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (James Stewart version)

Strangers On A Train

Spellbound!!!!!! (the dream sequence... so good!)

Dial M for Murder.

North By Northwest.

Marnie.

Psycho.

To Catch A Thief.

Rebecca!!!!!

I still feel like I'm missing a couple.

Those movies that I listed are among my favorites of all time. I REALLY love Hitchcock, especially the ones with Jimmy Stewart (my favorite actor ever).

Rope was the second Hitchcock movie I ever saw.. the first being The Birds.

And one of the biggest reasons (other than the plot itself) that I consider Rear Window my fav is because of Jimmy Stewart. Well, that and the fact that Grace Kelly is hot as hell.. lol

I'm 49 and first started reading Hitchcock paperbacks when I was about 8. Of course, we watched his TV series.

Now I know about the NWO and realize that fucker was a player, so I'm not quite as enamored with him...

Re: Alfred Hitchcock fans
Rope is one extremely amazing movie. All set in the one room, the sun tracking across the penthouse window, serving the buffet on the chest that the dead-David is stored in, typing the books given to Davids father with the rope that strangled him. John Dahl and Farley Granger give amazing performances as the psychopaths based on Leopold & Loeb. The horror of Rupert as he realizes... The music also inspires a nausea and unsettling effect.

Vertigo is similarly under-appreciated.

Also like The 39 Steps plus both versions of The Man Who Knew Too Much. North By Northwest is always fun.

Couple years ago we saw The Trouble With Harry and it was an entertaining farce, especially the bit about the clocktower.

Charade and Wait Until Dark are other great films done in the Hitchcock Tradition along with George C. Scott in RAGE and HARDCORE. Rod Steiger also played a Hitchcokian serial killer in NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY.

We all keep talking about Rope tonight.. I may have to watch it. lol

I think another reason I love Rear Window is vividness of the color in that film.. it just seems to jump off the screen. Really exceptional cinematography.

Sabotage
Blackmail
The Lady Vanishes
The Man Who Knew Too Much

they don't make movies like these anymore
