Scientists successfully extract hydrogen from water for fuel cells.
By Inquirer
Republished from Inquirer
The inventor of blue LEDs along with a Tokyo University team have successfully created hydrogen from water using galium nitride crystals and electrolysis

THE MAN who invented blue LEDs said he and a Tokyo Uni team have created hydrogen from water using gallium nitride crystals.

According to today’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun, that could lead to the creatio of fuel cells bbased on water.

Shuji Nakamara, said the paper, had connected gallium nitride crystals with platinum wire and when light is applied the water is electrolysed releasing hydrogen and oxygen.

But the conversion efficiency is still tiny, although the paper said conversion efficiency could be raised to over 20 per cent, which is the threshold required to commercialise the technique.

Yea AA, we know how your always making stuff up, you better put those links in there.rofl1rof1

Cool, thatīs another milestone. The technology may be close on the horizon yet.

Uh, OP for you information this is nothing new!
The science has been around a 100 years or so and If you ever attended chemistry class you
saw the demonstation.

Grendeldork, then you should no the problem is in doing it efficiently. In other words, you need to extract enough while using as little energy as possible in order for it to be viable.Do you realize how big of an idiot you just made of yourself.1doh1

Hey Cancer Man,
Read the link! - they only did in small quantities!
Itīs not like they mass produced hydrogen!
Also I was only letting AA know that this is not the first time hydrogen has been extracted from water!

I thought that was kind of funny AA. All these scientist trying to develop a technology that´s been around for 100 years. Maybe somebody should tell them before they waste any more time.muaha

325, no shit sherlock, we all know that. Try reading more than the thread title (which you didnīt even completely read) before you make a fool of yourself next time.

Re: Scientists successfully extract hydrogen from water for fuel cells.
OK Guys,
What does a fuel cell do?
It takes hydrogen and oxygen and combines them
to produce power.
The by-product is water!
The space program has used this since the ī60īs
and the Shuttle uses this and so does the Space Station.
The end product of a fuel cell is water!
So to get hydrogen (or oxygen) from water you have to introduce an electric current. The same
thing you learned in school - its called electrolysis.

325, your a little on the slow side aren´t you. Nobody is debating that hydrogen can be extracted from water. The system has to be efficient enough to drive a combustion engine without towing an additional power source with you.

BTW, you keep repeating that it´s electrolysis. Anybody that just read the article in the beginning can see that. Duh.

Unfortunately, the energy to split the molecules was three times higher than the energy that will be harnessed from the hydrogen.

Well MM,
I may be a little on the slow side - but that engine has not been built yet!
And Iīll bet that if it has itīs QUITE classified!
So all we are left with is a 1.5 volt battery, 2 test tubes and 2 6" pieces of copper wire and a jar of tap water.

The hydrogen motor is a reality - the method of obtaining hydrogen (from water) in sufficient quantitites (onboard a vehicle) is not proven.

Well, I´m not going to bicker back and forth with you but the point of what AA posted, Big Daddy D put as simply as it could be put.

"the energy to split the molecules was three times higher than the energy that will be harnessed from the hydrogen"

And that is where the problem still lies. AA was just bringing us info that they are a step closer in this process.

guys,, ladies,,, good evening,,, tgif!

this is wonderful technology, but i live on the third largest fresh water deposit in the world,, if this becomes the next saudi,,, surf is going to suck soon,,, i say ,, build desalination plants, and turn that water into fuel,, it could be made cost efficient

19 (and others)

Electrolysis *is* the simplest and most efficient way to extract H2 from water, and fuel cells would be an excellent power source. The problem is that, at the moment, fuel cells are too big and bulky to be a practical and viable power supply on the average car or truck. Once they solve the size problem, then youīll start to see widespread use.

I hear you Malu, I was just playing because I know how much you like to go to the beach there.
If you think about it, they´ll be using all of the current distilled water companies for a source once this finally hits. That would make a great stock investment.

Add some salt to the water and the electrolytic extractions are H2 and Cl - very viable process (commercially) done 24x7x365 as a by-product from the aluminum industry...... source of elemental Cl.

BTW - Before anybody says anything, H2 *alone* is *not* a good, and efficient fuel source. It takes something like three gal. of H2 to produce the same amount of energy that one gal. of gasoline does. Thatīs why that the ET on the Shuttle Orbiter is so big. The largest part of the space is taken up by the H2 (fuel) tanks (and thatīs for a three *minute* engine burn).

Re: Scientists successfully extract hydrogen from water for fuel cells.
You can get hydrogen by throwing zinc into water. I guess the zinc grabs the O from the H2O, leaving H2 and zinc oxide.

Some Israelis developed a way to create zinc from zinc oxide using solar power. Seems like the way to go. Just drop some zinc pellets into your water tank when you want power.

Sorry no linky, I stinky. It was posted here some time ago.
