Absolutely they should. But they won't as they too, cling to their religion. The external representations are their way of saying look at me, I belong to the such and such religion. Once again Ego is strengthened through its identification with form, and every Ego will fight to the end to defend its patch.

How curious that humanity invests so much time focusing on the impermanent (body) whilst all the time neglecting the permanent (Spark of God that powers all Souls within). Thus the suffering continues...

The truth is brutal to the ego and so the overly sensitive should not concern themselves with it, at least not in this life-time. The key word here is desire. What part of you desires to show the world your individuality? The real part, that aspect of you that is Spirit or the false impermanent ego, that will one day die and disappear.

The ego, once threaten grasps and gasps to justify it's actions.

A tatoo is a significant investment of energy (not only money (which is energy) but of thinking, planning, justifying, showing, not showing for decades). Indeed at first it is loved and an object of pride and then as the years go by and the work fades and the skin wrinkles, it becomes an object of regret. Every thought you have about that tatoo is energy that is misdirected away from the Source and towards the external false world.

Tatoos are the mark of the beast not only because they arise out of desire, but because they foster a sense of individuality, of uniqueness of being special. That is why they are unholy (un-wholey), they distract you from seeking unification with the One, become Whole (holy).

People do not miss having a Spark just because they have a tatoo, they are just distracted away from listening to that Spark. God's grace knows no limits and certainly a tatoo is of no concern to Spirit. It's the attachment to the tatoo that is the problem. This humanity has suffered for eon's and whilst ever we delay our search for unification (by remaining distracted and self focussed), we contribute to the prolonging of that suffering.

With regards to the body, The Buddha once said treat your body as you would a wound, care for it and make it well, but do not indulge it. How ironic that the OP got a tatoo of the Buddha. He would have been saddened by such an action, knowing that it was indicative of wrong focus.

It just seems silly to me to get a tattoo of any kind...
