BREAKING!!!! - Backup generators kick in after shutdown at Exelon's Byron nuclear power plant!!!
Backup diesel generators are supplying power to Byron nuclear power plant after the plant lost power this morning.

Viktoria Mitlyng, spokeswoman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Region III office Lisle, said two diesel generators are keeping the plant cool, with battery backup systems at the ready as well.

"It is not a huge concern," Mitlyng said. "It is the lowest of (the four) power emergency level declarations." [link to www.chicagotribune.com]

I didn't see an explanation of what caused the shut down. Seeing smoke at a transformer on the premises sounds questionable...at best. Does anyone know how old this plant is?

...well I still have my stockpile of Potassium Iodide. At least the Iodine 131 won't kill me.

Anyone wanna give me some Prussian Blue so I can deal with the cobalt-60 and cesium-137 that'll be entering my system if this effin' plant decides to have a pissing contest with fukushima and chernobyl?

In the OP article the caption under the picture of the nuclear plant reads:

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says Unit 2 at Exelon's Byron nuclear plant, seen here in March 2011, has been shut by an offsite power loss.

There are plenty of plants in the U.S. way older than that.... Nine Mile Point, Unit 1 in New York went online in 1969...

Ditto. Just went and checked the Potassium Iodide for the wife and myself as well as my son's liquid solution. Other stuff is good, but will have to send for more for my son as it expires in May.

Same style as Satsop which never opened due to being constructed on a fault line.

I went in there, we were cutting the stainless tubing into 1 ft. pieces to sell as scrap to raise money to finish RC 1.
I worked there about 15 weeks. Scraping a just started reactor to finish one "almost" done. If they hadn't started on 2 they could have finished 1. Then a quake would have brought it all down horribly. :-)

about a year ago a massive transmission station just south of me exploded... you could see the multicolored flashes of light from the arching of the electricity for miles around... but that was caused by a snake that crawled in through a ventilation louvre and apparently slithered across the wrong thing.

Here's the YouTube video I uploaded (no sound though) at that time of the event as it was shown by local news.. it was in May 2011.

Dont worry, I'm sure they will tell us the truth if any meltdown occurs just like they did at Santa Susana in Los Angeles Ca in the later 60s where the largest Nuke meltdown ever occured and more than once while neighbors never know for a long long time many years and have been dying of cancer for over 30 + years

well I have two geiger counters... and I know what the normal readings around here for me are... so if they start spiking, I'm gonna know that something has hit the fan somewhere relatively close.
