I was flunking out of school (party animal) right as the VN war was heating up. I enlisted in the Army National Guard, and I so doing, avoided the draft. I had received a draft notice 1 week before I enlisted.

I did my basic in Ft. Jackson, SC, was at Ft. Bragg NC the weekend of the Gulf of Tonkin incident, and then served the remainder of my enlistment through the ´60´ in the ANG.

I went to ANG OCS for a brief period, but dropped out because I was going to college full time and working a 40 hr week, along with being married. My NG unit was on the selective reserve list and we went to drill 2 weekends a month for 3 years.

I harbor no resentment toward ANYONE who did their service in the reserves or NG. It was a corrupt war, and based on what I know now, IMHO, there is NO SHAME OR DISGRACE for having served in that manner.
