Civil law enforcements want flying robots, aka DRONES, in the sky watching YOU! Will be equipped with infrared cameras!
Newser – Drones aren't just for Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, or Somalia anymore—they're coming to the good old US of A. The Senate sent a bill to President Obama yesterday that would require the Federal Aviation Administration to come up with rules to safely regulate domestic drones, USA Today reports. Civilian demand is already starting to heat up for various flying robots, which now come in a host of shapes and sizes, are surprisingly cost effective, and would occupy the same airspace as passenger planes.

More at [link to www.newser.com]

The drones' appeal is they can fly anywhere it's too dangerous or remote for people, and they cost less than piloted helicopters or planes.

In Mesa County, Colo., for example, sheriff's deputies have negotiated a special agreement with the FAA to fly a 2-pound helicopter up to 400 feet above ground so a camera can snap pictures of crime scenes or accidents. An infrared camera helps deputies track a missing person or a suspect in an overgrown ravine.

"It's a tool in the toolbox," says Ben Miller, the program's manager.

'Huge potential market'

One reason advocates expect police to adopt drones is they're less expensive than manned helicopters. A Draganflyer X6 drone such as the one Mesa uses costs about $36,000. Another squad car, for instance, costs about $50,000, Miller says.

"There is a huge potential market for civilian and commercial uses of unmanned aircraft systems," says Ben Gielow, general counsel for the industry group Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International.

Never swat at one or catch one cause it is the property of the USA Government and youll get a knock on the door asking for it back.

Seems that things are pretty bad when USA Today has an article about it, looks like the comments are negative there...wow.

I have seen what looks like a predator fly right over the busiest intersection in a large west coast city at rush hour. It was flying in tight formation alongside what looked like a cessna. This was in the summer of 2010. Is anyone here surprised? Doubt it...

That wold be stupid on their part. Too many tech nerds in this country that will figure out how to knock down and disable them...even if with a slingshot. Then you have 1000's of youtube posts on how to take them down....not exactly good info for enemy...

You know, I don't mind cameras in public or whatever....you shouldn't be worried if you aren't doing anything wrong....but if I open my window to see a drone checking me out that shit is going down. Perverted drones not allowed, unless they tip.

I have seen about three of them so far now in FL when out and about. They are really hard to spot because the ones around here are white.

Drones could come in handy in a search that is for sure but, should be used for that purpose only ie. emergencies. Its a slippery slope my friend and a way to normalize the beginning of a military state. Jeremy Benthem wrote about the implications of what he termed the panoptigon by warning that constant watch without knowing it works to control a population by obtaining power of mind over mind. Making you docile.

Ogden, Utah police first-in-nation to use surveillance blimp
Published 23 September, 2011

The police chief in Ogden, Utah, said the city could launch a surveillance blimp by Christmas as part of the city’s crime-fighting efforts.

The 54-foot-long craft will be equipped multiple cameras and operated by pilots via remote control. It would run for five to seven hours at a time at an altitude of around 400 feet.

Those of you who have played the game know what I'm talking about. You know, the small UAV's wondering through the buildings and outside, keeping an eye on you at all time, taking pictures, alerting the authorities towards your location when you break the law... You got the idea. Well, as it turns out, the game developers were not so far from reality as thought. Such a spy in the sky could be used by the police of Miami in the near future, to fight against crime.

The Micro Air Vehicle has been developed by Honeywell International, is capable of flying without human pilot input and is equipped with optic and infrared sensors with which it can keep an eye on crime from above the streets of Florida. The 6.3 kilograms Honeywell MAV has been chosen
by the Miami-Dade Police Department for its unique tactical capabilities, however it still needs the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration before it would patrol the streets of Miami.

Spokesperson of the Miami-Dade Police Department Juan Villalba said: "Our intentions are to use it only in tactical situations as an extra set of eyes. We intend to use this to benefit us in carrying out our mission." Because it is so small, the MAV can be easily packed into a backpack and launched immediately into the air when needed to help SWAT teams in evaluation in hostage taking situations, for example.

But the Miami police department is not the only one making use of MAVs. The US Army has been using them in conflict zones for years. Following the initiative of the Miami police department, now law enforcement agencies all across the US believe that MAVs should become one of the primary tools in domestic crime fighting situations.

The MAV is part of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle branch, or UAV, of flying vehicles, which have been developed into the US ever since the 1970s. CIA for example, is credited for the built of the first dragonfly-sized UAV, the 'Interceptor', a spy vehicle controlled by laser, while the first ever UAVs were the developed by Austrians in 1849 to bomb the Italian city of Venice.

"The FBI is experimenting with a variety of unmanned aerial vehicles. At this point they have been used mainly for search and rescue missions. It certainly is an up-and-coming technology and the FBO is researching additional uses for UAVs," said assistant director of the bureau's Operational Technology Division, Marcus Thomas.

Privacy issues

Additionally, the US government has been using UAVs since 2006 to monitor several of its borders and will most likely start to use modified Predator B drones in the near future. On the other hand, the use of drones to monitor crime in cities could pose some privacy issues. Imagine such a device spying on you, in your own house without you ever breaking the law.

Thus, flight clearance must be approved by both governmental and civilian agencies. "We had interest from dozens of law enforcement agencies. The FAA are preventing a bunch of small companies such as ours from becoming profitable," said Billy Robinson, chief executive of Cyber Defence Systems Inc. Cyber Defence Systems, had been testing with the Palm Bay police a 3.6 kilogram UAV, when the FAA intervened and restricted it from flight.

"There's been controversies all around about putting up surveillance cameras in public areas. Technological developments can be used by law enforcement in a way that enhances public safety. But every enhanced technology also contains a threat for further erosion of privacy," said Florida director of the American Civil Liberties Union, Howard Simon.

Yeah, but you do realise you could get 1 and then watch them watching you or watching them breaking the law and recording it, i bet their use will get curtailed for ordinary civilians yet the police will be able ti use them to their hearts content

Talk about synchronicity............I just read this thread a couple of hours ago. Then, I was talking with my husband a little while later. He had his back to the kitchen window and I saw one fly right over our back yard. I jumped up and said "What the hell kind of plane is THAT?" And my husband, looking confused said, "that's a drone."

So I pulled up this thread for him to read.
