Anonymous Coward User ID: 1386821 United States 02/12/2012 08:37 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Last summer there was a circuit overload that knocked my power out from approximately 7:00 PM until 6:45AM the next day. I didn't really mind, except that I had to be somewhere at 8:00AM. I didn't get much sleep and my phone nearly died. If not for the alarm clock feature on my phone, I would have missed a very important meeting. |
Cat Mouth (OP) User ID: 9602936 United States 02/12/2012 08:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I remember many years ago when i was still living at home with my parents when a straight line storm came..we were out of power for 4 days..at the time computers where not as mainstream as they are now..i didnt have a computer but i was a kid then so things werent so bad since i was a "kid" ..but i distinctly remember my parents sorta struggling to cope with the situation..i saw real fear in my parents eye's but it didnt sink in me that much as i had my sister with me and we were only 10 and 12 years old at the time.. Another time that was more recent was my grandparents when they lost electricity for 2 days some years ago..i remember them coming to stay with us for those few days and how worried they were..this was before i finished college and at the time i was home on spring break. Things were pretty dire for my grandparents as well. So i personally have not experienced while on my own..having to deal with no power for more then 24 hours like maybe some of you have. I just know those 3 measly hours were rather hard to deal with and im talking 3 hours only ..man oh man when things hit the fan ..i just dont know how people will cope. sure some will be able to handle it and some of them are well prepared but the majority are not...even those with real money are not prepared..there are far more unprepared then prepared people out there in America... :mesig432: |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 8711233 United States 02/12/2012 08:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | last year we had a winter storm...knocked power out for 5 days. on day 3 i went down to the only grocery store we have in town and it was closed due to power outage. the people were getting angry it was still closed and store refusing cash transactions cause scanners were down and nobody knows how much anything costs anymore (all barcoded)...dude said, if its not open tomorrow, he was gonna throw a brick and take what he needed. guy behind him was complaining of not having gas cause pumps at convenient store down w/ no power, and other dude was upset cause ATM still down and couldnt get cash in case grocery would take cash... and all that was on day 3....people dont have enough food, cash or fuel to last a week or two without power. i would say that 2 weeks without power, no grocery store, fuel pumps or ATMs will certainly be long enough to get a large part of the community going nuts. can you imagine 6 months beginning in November... yep...better to be prepared and ridiculed i say. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1480651 India 02/12/2012 08:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | last week we lost power for 3 hours and to my amazement i sorta got really depressed and very anxious that last 3rd hour of no power, no electricity, no electrical lighting, no microwave, no computer/net,no hdtv,no heat,etc.. i just sorta started panicking a bit..not to sound like a wuss or anything but it really bothered us here at home and i am only talking 3 measly hours of no power. Quoting: Cat Mouth So after that night it has been on my mind to buy a generator and stock up on candles, batteries, etc ..something i must admit i should have done long ago but at least its not too late i guess. Since that night i have been thinking about that 3 hours of no power in the house and how i handled it. Im a pretty strong willed person believe it or not. I can usually handle things with calmness..so i guess it was the sudden shock of no power that really caught me off guard. its been on my mind how others will be able to cope when things really get bad *if they do* and how well people are prepared for situations like this. I mean think of the chaos and unrest that would happen if our grids went down from a solar flare? If the average person has trouble handling 3 hours of no power..holy smokes!! Its going to be utter CHAOS when power is out for weeks or months at a time..i just cant fatham that situation in my mind. I always thought of myself as 'able' to handle such situations if or when its to come but i really had to re-examine myself after that 3 hours of no power... I feel that while many people think they will be able to cope with such situations..in reality they are no where near mentally prepared let alone physically prepared with survival items....we are heading into a solar maximum and our grids are dated and old...frail comes to mind and there is a damn good chance we will experience long term power outages in the near future. Be prepared..not just physically but "mentally", people!! you come from a privileged country .Here,i always have power cuts for 8 hrs per day even in summer and i have adjusted to it.I have survived without power for months. You get used to it. |

soulsurvivor User ID: 10628182 United States 02/12/2012 09:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In Feb 09 we lost power for 17 days due to a massive icestorm that brought down electric lines/poles over most of the state of Ky. Some people were without power longer than us and others were inconvienced only a day or so. It depended on where you lived. We all got through it just fine by using generators, moving in with relatives that had power, or simply just carrying on w/o electric. My husband and I chose to stay home without electric. You're right about needing a mental attitude to deal with the different lifestyle of no electric. We jokingly call it indoor camping and it's something like that. |
Judethz User ID: 5159851 United Kingdom 02/12/2012 09:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We had our power out for 34 hours just a couple of weeks ago, when the temperature was about -5º, with an icy wind. No lights, TV or internet wasn't the half of it. The one saving grace was that we have gas, so at least I was able to warm up a bit with the gas oven, but ya have to be careful because of carbon monoxide poisoning. IE: Be sure you have ventilation. The woman next door went to her sisters place the first night. I have one of those headlights with LED bulbs that you strap on your forehead, which is really great. So I just had to read, but could have used a battery powered radio if I wanted to. I also have other lights, plenty of batteries and candles, because I am at least part prepared. It was some problem with (we think) the water company screwing things up 2 years ago when they put in a new water mains. The guy said problems often take a few years to show up. Half the street was dug up to fix it. Anyway we sure where glad when about 9:30 pm on the second night the power came back on again. |

I thought it was quite relaxing actually. It was really nice and quiet. I've light some candles and read a book, went to bed a little earlier than usual. The only annoying part was missing a hot shower. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 2421834 Philippines 02/12/2012 09:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Must be nice to have such reliable power.lol Here in Mindanao Brownouts occur several times a week here at random times. Sometimes they last 10 minutes, sometimes a few hours. A heavy rain storm can knock out power from a day to a week depending on how severely the lines have been damaged. (it rains here a lot, so this is a common occurrence) The longest I went without power was 17 days in May of last year. Fortunately I am used to it, so when it does occur it is not the end of the world. |
