Published in Geology (February 2013), the team found magma that is twice as 'fizzy' as previously believed, which increases the likelihood of disruptive ash clouds from future eruptions. Many of the largest explosive eruptions in Iceland involve a viscous, high-silica magma called rhyolite, and are driven by volcanic gases (mostly water and carbon dioxide). It is these gases that give a volcanic eruption its fizz. At depth these gases are dissolved within the magma, but as the magma rises towards the surface during an eruption, the gases expand dramatically, causing the magma to froth and accelerate upwards as a foam. The viscous rhyolite foam breaks down into tiny ash fragments which form the ash clouds... Previously scientists had thought that Icelandic magma was less fizzy than those from Pacific Ocean volcanoes and expected much less explosive eruptions by comparison. However, this new research suggests some Icelandic volcanoes could produce eruptions just as explosive as those in the Pacific Rim... Dr Dave McGarvie, Senior Lecturer, Volcano Dynamics Group at The Open University, said: "We know that large explosive eruptions have occurred at infamous volcanoes such as Hekla and Katla, but it is important also to appreciate that large explosive eruptions are also produced by less well-known Icelandic volcanoes such as Torfajokull and Oraefajokull." Dr Hugh Tuffen, Royal Society University Research Fellow at Lancaster University, said: "The discovery is rather worrying, as it shows that Icelandic volcanoes have the potential to be even more explosive than anticipated. Added to this is the view of several eminent scientists that Iceland is entering a period of increased volcanic activity. Iceland's position close to mainland Europe and the north Atlantic flight corridors means air travel could be affected again." [link to hraun.vedur.is] |

A lot of others worldwide ! great Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21592753 [link to www.flickr.com] Boris Behncke That noise ... Here is a short bit of video that I recorded during the climax of the powerful episode of lava fountaining (paroxysm) at Etna's New Southeast Crater on the afternoon of 3 April 2013: [link to www.flickr.com] ... The detonations were heard over a vast area around Etna, including Catania, nearly 30 km away. My wife told me that in our home in Tremestieri Etneo, 20 km south of the crater, the detonations were rather powerful, much louder than the din of the traffic on the nearby main road of the village. The loud bangs caused astonishment and apprehension among many inhabitants of the Etna area. returning to the game of questions and answers why is this such a paroxysm was accompanied by an unusually strong roar that even Boris (best expert who has lived there for decades and watched hundreds of paroxysms) noted: " in reality it is still there and possibly bigger than ever before" "That noise ..." (links above) what determines the volume and features of the sounds of the eruption? (tooltip: remember the general physics, hydrodynamics and acoustics) to consider the question for discussion over cap of coffee welcome (specialized knowledge is not too required) experts are silent or in dreams... then why not continue tnen now a little bit fearmongering (very little) exactly the same as just one drop of sauce can greatly improve the taste of food served, as well as serious and scientifically based information from time to time are useful to mix with small additions of fantasies - science without imaginations would not have moved forward at all after yesterday (want-believe it, want - no that it was actually after) i asked here question about very unusual sounds of last Etna eruption (above) i read [link to www.wired.com] Another day, another paroxysm at Etna. This one was quite spectacular event in the new Southeast Crater — Dr. Boris Behncke captured some of the splendid lava fountaining from this eruption. Interestingly, he noted that the most impressive feature of this paroxysm, the 34th since the start of 2011, was the sound and was even a little shocked at how much in the same direction seems we think about... meanwhile, anyone noticed how the tremor pattern changed after the eruption ? [link to en.vedur.is] bump for updates basing on yesterday's NASA say shot (no fresh) still can not say anything definite, we can only note some interesting details [link to lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov] firstly, relatevely stable cloud formations (fixed breaks) to the south-east of Grimsey . i.e. in area of shallow eqs and main swarm . sometimes such formations indicates underwater processes. then, to the north from Grimsey, where no clouds, there is even a small but visible change in color of the ocean surface. finally, to the east and south-east from swarm area visible cloud formations similar to the so-called "heralds" earthquake precursors. there is a formula to calculate the intensity of the coming earthquake in length like cloud formations (experienced seismologists forecast is confirmed by her quite well). in this case, the intensity and the area of these formations is small, so if trust in this predictor in the TFZ very strong earthquakes in the future is not expected (though IMO seems to be a different opinion - they write on their website that it is possible the continuation of strong shocks and spread to the south-east) |

First helicopter broke, then thick clouds prevented to land and only 1 April hardly abandoned. Caught in a cyclone - all day on April 2, it was snowing and the wind was blowing. We were hooked another helicopter from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, but was unable to fly back - closed clouds. We spent the night without sleeping flown at -20 C. But in the morning, April 3, was gorgeous weather, and that's working. But for us at 9:00 flew a helicopter. Despite the tight deadlines and difficult weather conditions the job done. In the windows above the lava flow managed to select the volcanic gases. Geologists have fresh samples from lava flows. Evaluated the lava flow on the stream width of about 10-15 m and velocity - about - 3 m / s, to a depth of 3 m - it was in the range of 60 to 100 m3/sec. This is associated with increased activity of the eruption in the last 2 days. Photo and video made its outflow of lava and the formation of its various forms. The main lava flows extend towards Tolud. One stream flows south to Lazo. At night you can watch the fantastic picture - all in flames |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 907170 i guess you're climatologist , because it requires a very complicated and requires a great expenditure of computing power models if not, then it is quite convenient map volcanic activity is here [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com] Well thank you! You arrogant pompous ass ! Why are you on this site ? You are obviously too intelligent to waste your time discussing these issues with some one like myself. I have loved this thread until it was hijacked by wannabe scientist who regard themselves as experts an authorities on these matters. |

I think there is something going on with that volcano, and THAT is the true reason behind the recent NK 'crisis' I personally think they know a huge eruption is imminent, and the military build up all around Korea at the moment will suddenly become a humanitarian mission to save as many people as possible once it gets going |
