Icelandic volcanologist H. Sigurdsson wonders whether the current seismicity on Katla is caused by the melting of the glacier or by some kind of volcanic activity. Many scientists (and other folks too!) have been asking the same question for quite a long time! Sigurdsson thinks the cause is rather volcanic. What if Katla erupted just before the London Olympic Games? Would they close the European airspace with so much money at stake?

...The famous Icelandic volcanologist Haraldur Sigurdsson notes in his blog on July 17 that small earthquakes in Katla volcano have been frequent in both 2012 and 2011. On the accompanying graph you can see the number of earthquakes each year from 1991 to 2012. The situation is clearly not normal since the top is in 2012.

Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center, noted that this calving event marks a retreat of the Petermann Glacier “farther back than historical calving fronts.” A comparison of this event to the 2010 event shows that this iceberg broke off the glacier tongue farther upstream. The crack along the southern margin of this new iceberg, however, has been visible in satellite imagery for several years. That rift was first identified in 2001.

It looks very serious, Sigurdson unlike many who speculate on this subject is very respectable specialist.
And look on today seismic events near Godabunga, is another argument to listen to it with all the attention...

According to INGEOMINAS, a 10 July report from the Observatorio de Pasto noted that during recent months seismic swarms at Cumbal had been detected. Steam plumes from fumarolic fields were common. Nearby residents reported increases in gas emissions and seismicity, as well as possible noises. The Alert Level was increased to III (Yellow; "changes in the behavior of volcanic activity").

shows the energy build up over the past 20 years or so

look at Godabunga in the early-mid noughties. went a bit crazy it did, then it calmed down, then E15 erupted, with NOWHERE near the energy that Godabunga built up

God built up about 6e+10 joules of energy, and the E15 eruption came to about 8e+9 joules

NOW though, Myrdalsjokulsaskja is climbing rapidly as well. it's up to about 1e+10 joules this past year, and is climbing vertically at the moment

it's obvious that magma fed in up through Godabunga, and a tiny part of it went through e15, but now the monster called Katla is getting jiggy with it!

Seriously, though; the weather here changes drastically on average every half-hour, with the recent changes in the weather pattern (post gulf-oil bleah bleah), things have become less drastic, but otherwise, unless the red glowing stuff is at your doorstep, there's no reason to panic...

At the moment we're swinging from ice-covered winter to early summer-type surroundings, backa nd forth, for the past month it's been crazy; but we jave seen worse in living memory...
