This is an important deep earthquake. It does not mean Hekla will erupt today or tomorrow or next week, but it means that magma is moving underneath and that could sign an eruption in soon. Or not. Because volcanoes are difficult to predict. But when you smell those sulphur scents near Hekla, then an eruption is only hours away, regardless of the absence of earthquakes until then.

Moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues. Video data showed a new lava flow extrudes from the summit on the north-eastern flank of the volcano. Incandescence of the volcano summit, hot avalanches and strong gas-steam activity accompany this process. Satellite data showed two new lava flows on the south-eastern volcanic flank. The volcano was obscured by clouds.

So I fear it is not exactly ordinary behavior at Campi Flegrei, because prior to the late-20th century and current unrest, there has been only one previous episode of uplift and seismic activity in the caldera in historical time, and that one culminated in an eruption. We should also note that a there is a very similar caldera on the other side of the planet, Rabaul in Papua New Guinea, where a similar episode of unrest - uplift and intense seismic activity - occurred in 1983-1985, simultaneously with Campi Flegrei. As at Campi Flegrei things calmed down somewhat during the next nearly 10 years, and then - rather suddenly - uplift and seismic activity resumed; ground uplift amounted to 6-7 m in one night (exactly as had been the case in 1538 before the Monte Nuovo eruption) and then, in September 1994 Rabaul erupted, from two vents within the caldera.

At Rabaul, the people had been taught a lot by volcanologists during the 1983-1985 crisis, there had been excercises and public lectures - overall, a very high level of information and education. In 1994, people started evacuating voluntarily once they noted the rapid acceleration of seismic activity, before authorities officially ordered evacuation. At Campi Flegrei, there is a lot of information but the society is very different, and a Rabaul-type response to a similar eruption in the Campi Flegrei is rather unlikely.

Just an anecdote about the 1970 crisis of the Campi Flegrei: Local authorities had called H. Tazieff to analyse the situation. The French volcanologist was quite surprised at the regularity of the shallow earthquakes. The seismic events that Professor Imbo (by that time Head of the Osservatorio Vesuviano) thought were the sign of an imminent eruption were in fact caused by a train passing in a tunnel! The whole crisis is described by Tazieff in his book "Volcans". It was the start of a scandal, both scientific and political as it became obvious that the population had been evacuated for real estate reasons.

January 18, 2013 – GEOLOGY – With Kamchatka currently being one of the most volcanically active places on the planet, here is a summary of the current volcanic activity in the past week in the region by the Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team. Lava dome growth and effusion of a viscous lava flow continue at Shiveluch volcano, accompanied by moderate fumarolic activity and incandescence. Satellite imagery showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano all week. Eruption’s at four cinder cones producing fluid lava flows on the S part of the fissure on the flank of Tolbachik continues. A large thermal anomaly on the N part of the fissure was detected on satellite imagery. Gas and ash plumes from Tolbachik rose to heights of 4 KM a.s.l. A lava flow continues to extrude on the east flank of Kizimen volcano, accompanied by incandescence, hot avalanches and strong gas and steam activity. Two new lava flows were detected on the SE flank of the volcano by satellite data. A thermal anomaly was also observed. Possible ash eruptions from Karymsky volcano were detected in the past week with ash plumes possible rising to a height of 2.5 KM a.s.l. A thermal anomaly was detected at the volcano on the 11 and 14 January. Strombolian activity continues at Kliuchevskoi volcano. This was accompanied by gas and steam activity from the summit and incandescence. Thermal anomalies were detected on 11 and 13 Janaury. Here is a summary of volcanic activity in the past week in the Kuril Islands by the Sakhalin Volcanic Eruption Response Team. Gas and steam activity were noted from Chirpoi volcano on January 9 and 11. Chirpoi last erupted in 1982. A thermal anomaly and strong gas and steam activity were noted from Medvezhia volcano on January 11. Medvezhia’s last eruption was 1999. The caldera floor contains several lava domes, cinder cones and associated lava fields, and a small lake. The westernmost of the post-caldera cones, Menshoi Brat, is a large lava dome with flank scoria cones, one of which has produced a series of young (probably a few centuries old) lava flows up to 4.5 km long that reached Lake. –Volcano Discovery

The situation is quiet this morning on Mount Etna but seismicity has not fallen to backgound levels. Seismographs clearly show that gases still exert some pressure on the eruptive conduits. We should expect another strombolian episode in the coming days.

let's see if it dips down this time, or goes up.

also, the frequency of the red line sharp rises has increased, as evidenced by drawing a line through all the red line peaks, then comparing them to an earlier period. look at this gif, of two 45 day periods, the most recent, and between 28th August and 13th October 2012..

Four New Cinder Cones from the Ongoing Tolbachik Eruption in Russia

Sometimes, if an eruption just keeps on rolling, we start to lose track of it. For me, the Tolbachik eruption began to slip through the cracks, so I thought an update on the activity is in order.
After nearly 7 weeks, the eruption at Tolbachik is still going strong. The latest KVERT report on the eruption says that it has produced four (!) new cinder cones on the flanks of the volcano and the lava flows continue to move away from the volcano on the western and southeastern flanks of the volcano. The plume from the volcano, still plainly visible on satellite images, continue to reach altitudes of ~4 km/13,100 feet above sea level. Interestingly, some reports mention that all this activity has started to produce a new lava lake at Tolbachik, possibly the first lava lake recorded on the Kamchatka Peninsula...

...Still, this *is* a major eruption, and while the explosive activity at the Tolbachik vents seems to be much less than in 1975-1976, the lava output appears to be significantly higher; in the previous eruption lava flows never came close to 10 km length and this time they have apparently come close to 20 km. Tolbachik 2012-2013 is not what I would call "enormous" (that is the term one would apply to a flood-basalt eruption, or at least a Laki 1783-type event), but certainly it is a very significant eruption.
