what's the best way to keep people from stealing your ideas at work.
besides the obvious.

of not telling them..

that doesn't work because we are all in group meetings, then they march up to other people outside of the meetings down the road and take credit for your ideas.

i have some plans.

but i won't GLP's creativity.

it's usually technical stuff, ie. engineering, so i was thinking of placing a false scientific idea in his head privately that sounds plausible, make him think he came up with it, and let him blurt it out in a meeting amongs the R*D people, and look stupid.

he already stole one of my ideas that would save the company 200,000 $ or thereabouts that was strictly technical.

he spends all day schmoozing it up instead of doing his job.

Re: what's the best way to keep people from stealing your ideas at work.
get them written up and give them to your boss. Do this tactfully so you don't look like you're trying to take his/her job. (Also, HR may keep a file on you. Print your recommendations and ask for them to be kept in your HR file. If they say "Oh Mr. Smith, that's not necessary," say "I'd just like you to help me keep a record. I want to make a difference to this company." Yeah, it's BS, but you asked.)

Also an e-mail copying everyone in would be good too. Or maybe just the "important folks." Be diplomatic. "I was just thinking if we tried this..." etc. DOCUMENT DOCUMENT DOCUMENT.

And good luck. Most people want to just squash anyone who has any better ideas and many people get booted out for such things. It's hard to think "higher" or beyond others and not have them want to take you down like a deer in hunting season.

it's fine if they company has them down the road, but IMO there is nothing lower than using other's people ideas to forward your so-called career.

Document your work.

Emails are wonderful for that.....and for CYA's when someone says you didn't do something and you did.

Ahh the fun.

If you have a work enemy, don't fight with the work.

Set him up with the hot intern on 5th. get photos. Pay her $100 to tell HR he 'molested' her in her cubicle. $50 bonus if she tears up.

can you start getting chummy with your bosses boss? If you've got a boss in your way, you're screwed. To be honest, I've never gotten past that. One bad boss is like bars on the window, you ain't going nowhere. And if he's favored, even more so. Make a lateral company move where you can go up.

You need to study your Psychopath, Your Malignant, Your Megalomaniac, and your Sociopath.

Bear in mind these diseases of the mind may be anywhere from 0.00% to 100.00% diseased.

When you have learned how to identify them, and how their brain works, there are techniques you can use to subvert them.

Re: what's the best way to keep people from stealing your ideas at work.
thanks for the suggestions so far...

there's a guy in another department who has recognized me and although there's no room for a lateral or up move into his, (he wishes there was), i've got a plan.

this guy has turned into the mcdonalds' manager who is a tyrant, he's not my direct boss, but still in the mix, and whoa, he changed and started stepping on people as soon as he saw a path to a possible one-up.

when three of us were running the show before, one got recognition first and turned on the other two.

ass

i got some plans, just wanted to bounce it off others.

Give them the beginning plans that you scratched off your acceptable list unto your self because you gained more insight and seen these were train wrecks in the making...

Give them those plans and that will surely break them from taking others work being a scabbing gold bricker false hypocrite.

If they say anything to you... say well yes that was my plan and yes I give it to you because I was not going to be using it.

Works every time like a charm...

Don't share anything with this guy. If there is a meeting at which you're supposed to share your ideas, visit the other attendees BEFORE the meeting to share your ideas with them. Then go to the meeting he's in and share your idea. Work AROUND him, pre-empt him, go behind his back. If he asks you in private what you're thinking DON'T TELL HIM. You need to cut people like him out of the loop. Be polite, pretend you're his buddy, but keep him out of the loop.

Re: what's the best way to keep people from stealing your ideas at work.
I worked with a woman once who aways stole my ideas. It pissed me off until I realized she was stealing them because I GAVE THEM TO HER. I stopped sharing ideas with her outside of large meetings. I took my ideas directly to her boss and other lateral superiors whom I trusted. Using lateral superiors in this way can be a great help. She would come to me in private to "pick my brain" and I would act clueless. Then I'd show up at the meeting with a list of well thought out ideas. Pissed her off completely. She would interrupt me in meetings, trying to derail me. I would put my hand up and keep talking. I would say, "please don't interrupt," and keep talking over her. Pissed her off to no end. I started sitting next to her at meetings so I could more easily ignore her. Never sit directly across from or down the table from your nemeiss. Sit next to him. Eventually this woman got fired. She freaked out becasue her mother lode had dried up, started acting out with everybody and pissed off the CEO. The key is stay calm, stay professional, stay friendaly, but outplay him.
