going to the dealer and forking over 130 bucks to have it made? I was told only they can do it because of some embedded chip in the original key. Hogwash! I say! There has got to be a way around it, right?

There is no way around it only the dealers posses the codes.

sorry, nearly all cars have the key/chip crap now and 100 bucks is the price for a duplicate... and they won't make a copy if the OWNER of the car isn't the one to bring it in and sit for a fucking hour while it's being done.

You might be able to get a valet key cheaper, never asked about that, still gotta go through the BS of bringing the car in and waiting.

i just had a copy of my 2000 POS toyota done at walmart. they have a tester to see if there's a chip in it or not, and it was really after 2000 the chips were in all the keys, so go there and see. also, check local hardware stores, they may do it cheaper if you need a chip key.

This works for some other brands and may work for you...

Buy a blank from e-bay

Have the blank duplicated by a good key-maker (some don't have the equipment for these new-fangled car keys)

Call all the dealers (and independent Nissan mechanics) in your area and go to the one with the cheapest price to program the key.

Sometimes you can get the programming done for free if they really want your business in the future.

Take the coded key, make as many no-coded cheap copies as you want to. Have the coded key placed inside the steering column as close to the ignition switch as possible. The system will pickup the code from the expensive key next to the ignition lock, and off you go!
