OP A really cheap solution-I bought a pump for a hand drill that can be plumbed easily into my system....have backup batteries always charged in a farady cage for my cordless drills...cost me all of 20$ for pump and plumbing supplies ;)

LOL you beat me to it ! ! !

Or find a 12vdc motor and a car battery and a solar panel charger. Something like that

Wow,

I did not even know they had hand pumps that work that deep.

My parents are SOL though, as ours is 300 feet deep but we have surface water on the property.

I told them they needed a wind mill and a Cistern.

Our cheap solution for emergencies is a Sawyer 5 gallon bucket filter kit and a duda diesel 75 micron bucket strainer.

That gets everything but viruses or Hepititus if you are in one of those countries.

6 drops of household bleach per L will kill the viruses, IE roughly one teaspoon per 5 gallons.

One solar panel,a deep cell battery, and an inverter capable of powering your pump(check how many watts it is and double it).

It would provide all the water you need for around $200.00

This is a pump I was going to buy and have installed over my existing well cap, called my plumber to see how it would actually work, as they say they can be installed usually by yourself.
When I called the plumber I found out that it would be ILLEGAL in Wisconsin to put this pump over my existing well. He said I would have to drill a new well? wtf

So good luck with it. I will not pay 6-7k to drill a new well, I would spend my time combing the hillsides for a spring!

First of all forget the solar powered pump idea it is too expensive. Drill powered pump for a 200 ft well LOL!Either just use a 220 volt generator or put a plastic cistern in the ground next to the house with an on demand 12 volt pump and pump water from the tank. Usually tanks run about a buck a gallon plus the backhoe work. If you want to use the regular faucets in the house get a generator it is the cheapest option. Just make sure you get enough wire to reach the breaker panel and that it is the proper guage. Also get the correct plug for the gen output. If you run it to the panel be sure to disconnect the main input feed from the grid so you dont backfeed power to the grid. Good luck!
SoWhat?

"Simple Pump" is a hand pump that will work when AC is down, but it's around $2000.

Either a stainless steel handpump or a solar one. Go online and you can select a company after researching. Ask about the pump curve of production after determining how deep your well is, how it is rated for 'recovery'( in other words how much water it can produce and for how long) as that is necessary in determing what pump to purchase and you should ceck to see if it is a four inch one.

When obtaining the gnereator as others have suggested you must check to make sure you have one large enough or you will fry your now operating pump.

You will require a fairly large one. Not one of the little guys you see at Home Depot.

Again, you have to know what you are operating sizewise in order to know how big a generator to use.

Windmill generator or solar. As my friend used to say, "If the sun isn't shining, the wind is blowing". There is a guy on Youtube who shows you how to convert an old alternator using magnets to produce lethal voltages. Add a belt to your windmill hooked to the alternator and zap!

Re: I Have an ELECTRIC Water pump for my home well. In Case of a POWER OUTAGE what is the best backup??????
As the title says, I am wondering if there is a prolonged power outage, we will need to have fresh water, and my well is accessed by an electric pump. As we all know, we cannot live more than a few days without water. Our well is approx. 200+ feet deep. We do have food stored, but to be honest, have overlooked the ability to pump water without power.

What is the best manual pump in this situation?? What is the best setup? What is the best cost efficient cure to this situation? Any products, websites, etc. would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,,,

Solar panels.

And batteries.

not just batteries...

make sure you use a few heavy duty marine batteries.

they are designed to run things unlike a car battery is designed to start the car.

Re: I Have an ELECTRIC Water pump for my home well. In Case of a POWER OUTAGE what is the best backup??????
I had the same question and went with a portable gas generator. Considered installing a standby diesel generator, partly for cool factor, but that's a lot more hassle and money.

Good hand pump will be $500 plus installation, as I recall.

I just bought a 6500 Watt portable gasoline generator on sale from costco.com for $700. You still have to wire it into your house somehow, but it seems no more expensive, and a lot more convenient. Instead of just water, you'll have power for your refrigerator, furnace / boiler, clothes washer, etc.

And when there's no gas, or extremely rationed gas?

The correct answer OP is a small solar setup with a pump that can run via stored solar energy (battery bank) or off electric service if it's present.

Re: I Have an ELECTRIC Water pump for my home well. In Case of a POWER OUTAGE what is the best backup??????
Careful with the generator issue. running a 7500 watt on 220 generator. BURNED up 1 Flotec pump and now maybe another it started smoking killed breaker. It maybe the gen as it will run 5000 A C unit a fridge and a freezer coffee pot lights (no problem) BUT it must be the voltage drop killing the pumps 1/2 hp. had everthing OFF.
At other times was able to run on a 4500 watt generator with no problem.

Re: I Have an ELECTRIC Water pump for my home well. In Case of a POWER OUTAGE what is the best backup??????
Despite the effort a backup hand pump makes the most sense to me. The simplest thing is always the most likely to work. Get electric backup as well for your main pump, solar or generator. But the hand pump means you won't die when you run out of diesel, or if a severe storm/flood damages your equipment.
